Continue ReadingToday we released our updated MD/DC 2022 player rankings and as usual, a flow of content breaking down the updates will follow throughout the week. With any list, the top 10 is always a topic of conversation, so I’ll be taking a look at the prospects who landed in that range.
1. Cameron Whitmore Cameron Whitmore 6'7" | PF Archbishop Spalding | 2022 State #30 Nation MD | Archbishop Spalding/Team Melo
Whitmore keeps the top spot in the rankings after he exploded onto the national spotlight thanks to a productive spring and summer. For local fans, Whitmore’s athleticism and talent was no secret, but the pandemic last year halted any chance for coaches around the country to get a feel. The 6-foot-7 forward is widely considered a top-30 prospect in the country and quite honestly, could be in the top-10 range if national scouts saw him more often. Whitmore is down to a final three schools consisting of Villanova, North Carolina and Illinois.
2. Tyrell Ward Tyrell Ward 6'7" | SF DeMatha | 2022 State #56 Nation MD | DeMatha/New World
Ward announced his commitment to Xavier this summer and will be an exceptional addition for head coach Travis Steele next fall. The 6-foot-7 forward is a dynamic scorer and tough shot maker who projects to be a productive college player once he adds size to his frame. Ward’s size, skill and versatility are all prized in today’s game.
3. Favour Aire Favour Aire 6'10" | C Bishop McNamara | 2022 State #86 Nation MD | Bishop McNamara/New World
Aire cemented himself as a walking double-double in front of an army of coaches during DMV Live. When you consider this year’s McNamara team isn’t working with the firepower it usually has, it should result in Aire putting up even more impressive numbers with the workload that’s expected of him. He’s an athletic, 6-foot-10 big who impacts the painted area on both ends of the floor. Georgetown, Indiana, and Louisville are just a few of the schools who have offered Aire.
4. Rodney Rice Rodney Rice 6'4" | CG DeMatha | 2022 State #89 Nation MD | DeMatha/ Team Durant
Rice has a strong argument as the best pure scorer in this class with his ability to do so from all three levels. He doesn’t need much time or space to get his shot off from three and finishes with craft on his drives to the basket. The 6-foot-4 combo guard should make his college decision within a month and will likely choose between Virginia Tech and Louisville.
5. Darren Buchanan Jr. | Wilson/ Team Durant
Buchanan is the definition of a workhorse. At 6-foot-7, he has a body that is ready for the college level and knows how to use it to his advantage. He’s one of the more versatile defenders you’ll find in the region and contributes to the stat sheet in a handful of ways. Buchanan will be the centerpiece for Wilson this winter, but if you caught him in action with Team Durant this summer, you understand that he is a willing teammate to fill whatever role that best benefits his team. It’s unknown at this point which schools Buchanan is seriously considering, but from what I’ve gathered George Washington, UMBC, VCU and Rutgers are all included.
6. Christian Winborne Christian Winborne 6'2" | CG Gilman | 2022 State #199 Nation MD | Gilman/Team Thrill
Winborne had a busy month of July proving himself on the UAA Circuit with Team Thrill. He decided to end his recruitment after announcing his commitment to St. Joseph’s, where he should have a chance to play right away and be a good fit in the A-10 Conference. He’s one of the more balanced guards you’ll find who can score from anywhere on the floor, but also understands how to get others involved. Winborne is a gritty defender who makes plays both on and off the ball.
7. Christian Watson Christian Watson 6'6" | SF St. John's | 2022 State #121 Nation MD | St. John’s/DC Premier
Watson announced his commitment to head coach Jim Larranaga and Miami this past week. The 6-foot-7 forward fits the eye test with his size, length and broad shoulders that should all be a factor into him contributing in the ACC. Watson is a versatile, athletic wing who can defend multiple position, be an impact in the open floor as a finisher and make shots from three. Watson could be one of the top prospects in terms of ceiling if he continues to develop after arriving on campus next fall.
8. Deon Perry Deon Perry 5'8" | PG Mt. Carmel | 2022 State MD | Mt. Carmel/Team Melo
Perry received a boost in the rankings and rightfully so after he took DMV Live by storm. The 5-foot-8 floor general can completely control a game for 32 minutes with his ability to facilitate, score and make plays almost every time the ball is in his hands. He’s an active defender both on and off the ball. Look for Perry to average big numbers this season for the Cougars before taking his talents to Loyola (MD) as a freshman.
9. Tyson Commander Tyson Commander 6'4" | SG The John Carroll School | 2022 State #203 Nation MD | John Carroll/Team Melo
Commander checks in at No. 9 after helping lead the Patriots to a BCL Title over St. Frances last winter. He had good spurts during the spring and summer, while using the DMV Live stage to prove his growth as a player operating off the dribble. His value will always stem with his long range shooting ability, but as he continues to improve attacking the basket, Commander’s stock will rise. He’ll have plenty of chances to do so as a senior with John Carroll. He holds over a dozen offers in total, but Iona seems to the program recruiting him most aggressively.
10. Jerrell Roberson Jerrell Roberson 6'8" | C DeMatha | 2022 State MD | DeMatha/Team Takeover
Roberson helped boost his stock, as did many prospects, with the DMV Live event. At 6-foot-8, Roberson possesses good touch away from the rim on his jumper and can be a real pick-and-pop threat as time goes on. He finished strong over the rim when playing off penetrating guards and has good IQ overall. Becoming a more consistent presence on the glass will be key when projecting him for the next level. He recently took a visit to James Madison.
