Continue ReadingThe season is right around the corner, and you can feel the excitement. This year features the newly formed 5A Division, which means we will not only have a 1st time 5A state champ but also a 1st time 5A player of the year. While it’s way too early to tell who will come away with the award, it’s not too early to take a look at some of the top players.
Darrion Williams Darrion Williams 6'6" | SF Bishop Gorman | 2022 State NV 6’6 SF Bishop Gorman 2022 – Williams is fresh off taking home POY honors at the Ron Massey classic. Now he sets his sights on the 5A Division. He’ll check two important boxes. Williams will be productive and play on a winning team.
Richard Isaacs Jr. Richard Isaacs Jr. 6'2" | PG Coronado | 2022 State #44 Nation NV 6’2 PG Coronado 2022 – The excitement is building for the return of Isaacs. The newly minted Texas Tech commit is a difference-maker with the talent to lead his squad all the way. A magical run for Pop, could end with a POY award.
Sebastian Mack Sebastian Mack 6'4" | CG Coronado | 2023 State #58 Nation NV 6’2 SG Durango 2023 (#1PHN 2023) – Although only a Junior, Mack is one of the most seasoned players in the state. The sharpshooting wing, who had a memorable playoff run his sophomore season, looks to make a similar run this year. His scoring and shooting make him one of the state’s top players.
Joshua Jefferson Joshua Jefferson 6'8" | PF Liberty | 2022 State #158 Nation NV 6’6 PF Liberty 2022 (#1PHN 2022) – Jefferson is a blue-collar guy with skill. He leads a confident Liberty squad, that is looking to make some noise. His leadership and rebounding will make him a difficult matchup for opponents.
Osiris Grady Osiris Grady 6'7" | PF Coronado | 2023 #195 Nation UT 6’8 PF Coronado 2023 (#2PHN 2023) – Look for a monster season from Grady. He’s improved his wing skills added with his rebounding and rim protection, and the 6’8 forward should put up big numbers. Grady should benefit from the presence of Isaacs, with the two of them leading, the Cougars should be a factor this season.
Sterling Knox Sterling Knox 6'5" | SF Red Rock Academy | 2023 State NV 6’5 SF Durango 2023 (#3PHN 2023) – Knox may be a sleeper, but he has shown that he can score against top competition. Knox is a versatile player, that can beat you with his shooting, and playmaking. The Trailblazers will need him if they’re going to reach their goals.
David Nealy David Nealy 6'2" | SG Stranahan | 2026 #27 Nation FL 6’2 PG Bishop Gorman 2024 (#5PHN 2024) – The more of Richardson I see, the more I love him. He can score in bunches, and the fact that he’s going to play PG surrounded by a ton of weapons makes him an attractive dark horse POY candidate.
