While coaches want to see more than just how many a guy can score, there’s no denying seeing someone simply score at will is hard to overlook. In this piece, I am going to look at 5 guys that did this. Scored the basketball and did it well. I encourage college coaches to check out these players, but also know they do more than just score.
Cyan Ervin Cyan Ervin 6'4" | SF Wellston | 2023 State OH (Wellston)
Ervin played with a lot of pace and excelled in the half court Sunday. The 6-foot-3 junior scored the ball in a variety of ways especially when playing more slow paced basketball. Slashed well off the perimeter or settled in with his shooting touch. Has a good feel for the game and high IQ in terms of playmaking ability. I like Ervin’s upside playing with Wellston as he has a chance to really be a high scorer every night with the Rockets.
Jake Slezinger Jake Slezinger 6'3" | SG Gibraltar Carlson | 2022 State MI (Gibraltar Carlson)
Slezinger came down to Ohio for the Expo originally being from Michigan. He came to play that’s for sure. The sharp shooting guard was knocking down 3PT shots with ease and found success hitting from NCAA range. Really excelled as a catch-and-shoot type of player and found success either spotting up on wing or trailing on transition offense. The senior has decent size at 6-foot-3 and could even make perimeter shots using one dribble. Really liked his upside too as he may have been the best shooter in the gym.
Trent Hundley Trent Hundley 6'5" | SF Eastern Brown | 2022 State OH (Eastern Brown)
Hundley makes my list after being part of a strong Team 11 during the expo. The 6-foot-5 senior from Eastern Brown can put the ball in the basket in a variety of ways. Midrange or penetration is where he was most confident, but what I especially liked about Hundley is how easy he makes it look. Glides to the rim and strong with the basketball. Simply a mismatch on the perimeter with the size and scoring touch. Hundley has a really good chance of being SHAC player of the year in the Winter as many programs will struggle to defend him on the perimeter.
Trenton Collins Trenton Collins 6'4" | SF Utica | 2023 State OH (Utica)
Collins looks like a football player with his physique and frame. Only a junior, Collins impressed me with his ability to finish the basketball in traffic. Only being 6-foot-4, Collins plays bigger than he is and much of that is due to his muscular frame. Persistent on the offensive glass and long. Showed he could pull up in the midrange and knock down those tough shots. Transferred to Utica in the offseason and will be a major component.
Evan Manes (Tippecanoe)
Manes really filled the stat sheet with his shooting abilities at the Expo. Having a teammate like Bede Lori Bede Lori 6'2" | SG Caldwell | 2023 State OH that sets his guys up to succeed. Confident putting shots up and was able to get quality shots in the air off the dribble. Solid mechanics for the junior. Manes is a little unknown due to him being on a senior heavy Tippecanoe team last year. I expect this season to be a breakout year for him as he now has an opportunity to be a leading scorer for the Red Devils.
