Recognizing that many of our ranked players could play several different positions (and some of the top players defy a position category), this is by no means a grouping of the best players into teams.
But just for fun, we made teams of the players based off their rankings. The first team was: PG Mozae Downing-Rivers Mozae Downing-Rivers 6'3" | PG Free State | 2022 State KS , CG Fontaine Williams Fontaine Williams 6'1" | CG Derby | 2022 State KS , SG Jordan Brown Jordan Brown 6'2" | SG St Francis | 2022 State GA , SF Mark Mitchell Mark Mitchell 6'7" | SF Sunrise | 2022 State #8 Nation KS , PF Trey Moala Trey Moala 6'7" | PF Paola | 2022 State KS , and C Jace Linenberger Jace Linenberger 6'7" | C Hays | 2022 State KS .
Here’s the 2022 Rankings Second Team, made up of the #2 player at each of our six positional classifications (listed by position, name, state ranking, size and high school):
Second Team:
Point Guard: Max Alexander Max Alexander 6'0" | PG Next Level Prep | 2022 KS , #6, 6-foot, Next Level Prep:
Alexander reclassified just in time to be rated the second-best point guard in the state in the 2022 class. After establishing himself at McPherson High School, Alexander became one of the best point guards in the state at Buhler. Now he’ll work at Next Level Prep to improve his stock before moving on to the college game. Alexander is about as dangerous with the ball as anyone. He can stop on a dime and launch a pull-up jumper that is deadly. He can hit the outside shot. And he can drive and distribute with the best of them.
Combo Guard: Christian Bowen-Webb Christian Bowen-Webb 6'2" | CG Bishop Miege | 2022 State KS , #8, 6-foot-2, Miege:
Last year’s ultra-talented Miege team cruised to a state title, hardly challenged by the 4A field. Bowen-Webb tossed in 14 in the championship romp over Louisburg. The long and athletic guard was one of the state’s best shooters as a junior, hitting a remarkable 42% from deep. He’s great on the drive and hits shots in the midrange. And of course he gets to the goal, or just about anywhere else he wants to go with the ball.
Shooting Guard: Seth Madron Seth Madron 6'2" | SG Mcpherson | 2022 State KS , #19, 6-foot-2, McPherson HS:
The last time Madron was in a Bullpup uniform, he accounted for 14 points and 5 rebounds against the eventual state champ Miege powerhouse. For his work, he earned third-team 4A. He took another step to prove himself by playing a versatile and dynamic role for Midwest Magic Elite this summer. Madron is one of the most explosive shooting guards you’ll find. He has a powerful frame and a deceiving vertical. At just 6-foot-2, he’s an effective shot blocker and rebounder. For those talents he could be considered any of the 1-4 positions in high school.
Small Forward: Gradey Dick Gradey Dick 6'7" | SF Sunrise Christian (KS) | 2022 State #21 Nation KS , #2, 6-foot-7, Sunrise:
Gradey Dick Gradey Dick 6'7" | SF Sunrise Christian (KS) | 2022 State #21 Nation KS , on the second team? Well, yeah, because Mark Mitchell Mark Mitchell 6'7" | SF Sunrise | 2022 State #8 Nation KS took the first-team small forward spot. No slight intended toward Dick. No one is questioning him. He’s currently ranked #23 in the nation by Prep Hoops. Not a lot needs to be said about the brilliant Kansas University commit. His combination of length, athleticism and versatility is rare. Because it’s been a while since he suited up for Wichita Collegiate, and because he jets around the world with the most elite amateur teams, not a lot of us get to see him play. But the reports are he’s acquitting himself nicely with Team USA.
Power Forward: Henry Thengvall Henry Thengvall 6'5" | PF Kapaun Mt. Carmel | 2022 State KS , #28, 6-foot-6, Kapaun:
Because stats for Kapaun are tough to find, it’s hard to keep track of Thengvall during the high school season. But he shows with his Mid-Kansas club team that he’s an athletic forward who plays hard. He can be just as effective running the floor and filling the wing as he is in the post. He moves without the ball, chases down plays, can put the ball on the floor, and knocks down shots. What more can you ask?
Center: Keaton Williams Keaton Williams 6'8" | C Wichita Southeast | 2022 State KS , #40, 6-foot-8, Wichita Southeast HS:
The second-highest rated center in the class is the long leaper Williams, who has stayed generally off the radar so far for Wichita Southeast. He was a key sub for the senior-dominated Golden Buffalo. But his shot blocking and active defense jumped out this summer for Midwest Magic Elite. He is a smooth runner and quick leaper who can crash the boards and score around the goal. Watch for Williams to increase exponentially his stats from last high school season.
