The event took place at two different locations: St John Bosco High School and St Monica High School. The event featured some of the top HS teams in the SoCal area. I was able to attend both days, and here’s a quick look at some additional top standouts.
1. Tyler Bey Tyler Bey 6'9" | SF Fairfax | 2023 #177 Nation CA-S – Fairfax 2023
A transfer from New Jersey, Bey will have an immediate impact on the team. What stood out to me the most about Bey is his long range shooting. He has the potential to be a sniper from three. He can catch and shoot or he can create a look for himself off the dribble. Good face up game. He has the ability to get his shot off over most perimeter defenders. Defensively, I like his length. He can be a very good defender on the wings.
2. Ben Shtolzberg Ben Shtolzberg 6'4" | SG Notre Dame | 2022 State CA-S – Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks) 2022
A Creighton commit, Shtolzberg is one of the top point guards on the West Coast. He’s a terrific floor leader, he sees the court and he’s a steady player with the ball in his hands. I’ve watched him play since he was a freshman and was highly regarded as a shooter. His game has developed so much more since then. He excels in the pick and roll hitting the roller. Very hard to stop when getting downhill. Overall unselfish player who keeps the ball moving offensively.
3. Darius Carr Darius Carr 6'3" | SG Fairfax | 2023 State #63 Nation CA-S – St Bernard 2023
Carr is another player I’ve watched since he was a freshman and he too has made tremendous strides in his game. What really stood out to me this time around was his off ball movement. He’s always been pretty solid with the ball in his hands, but this weekend in particular he was making a lot of strong cuts along the baseline and getting behind the defense where teammates would find him for lobs or little bounce passes. He’s also become a very strong on ball defender.
4. Malachi Scott Malachi Scott 6'6" | SF Long Beach Jordan | 2022 CA-S – Compton 2022
Scott is a player I first saw two weekends ago at the Ron Massey Memorial Classic. He’s got the potential to be a big stock riser this season. A senior, he can definitely help a team at the next level. He does such a solid job operating in the post. He gets good position and can play with his back to the basket. Can take advantage over smaller defenders. What also stands out to me about his game is his ability to pass out of the post. He recognizes the defense and finds teammates.
