The event serves as an early tune up to the high school regular season and a lot of top schools take part in the event. I was able to attend on Saturday and spent most of my time watching the action on Court 1. Here’s a look at some of the top big guards that I saw.
1. Jayden Bush Jayden Bush 6'0" | PG St. Anthony | 2022 CA-S – St. Anthony 2022
An incoming senior, Bush is a solid floor leader. Can handle the ball well under defensive pressure. He pushes the pace well in transition and he keeps his head up while dribbling. He’s very quick and a little small, but he’s strong. He can get to the rim and he does a good job of drawing contact and getting to the free-throw line. He also does a good job of crashing the boards for a guard. Good court vision and an unselfish player.
2. Jaqari Miles – West Ranch 2023
Miles stood out to me for his slashing ability. He was one of the best guards I saw at being able to break down the defense off the dribble. He’s very tough to stop when he gets downhill. A strong finisher who does a good job absorbing contact and still being able to finish through the defense. Does a good job getting to the free-throw line.
3. John Paul Mobley Jr. – Bishop Gorman (NV) 2024
Mobley was one of the better playmakers that I saw. He’s very quick and has good court vision. Good playmaker who is always looking to make the right pass. In transition, he keeps his head up and recognizes his teammates running with him. He does a good job dribbling under defensive pressure and he can recognize who on his team has the hot hand and get the ball to them. Defensively, he was one of the few players I saw that picked up at half court.
4. Justin Edwards – Eisenhower 2022
Edwards did a good job of using his speed and some solid footwork to get into the lane. He’s a solid playmaker and a good ball-handler. When he gets into the lane, he can look to score or he can drive and dish to open shooters. Very good player in the pick and roll. Uses his screens well and can react to what the defense does. He’s a good shooter from three-point range. He does a good job creating perimeter shots for himself. Can shoot when wide open and can also shoot off the dribble.
