The event serves as an early tune up to the high school regular season and a lot of top schools take part in the event. I was able to attend on Saturday and spent most of my time watching the action on Court 1. Here’s a look at some of the top big forwards that I saw.
1. Malachi Scott Malachi Scott 6'6" | SF Long Beach Jordan | 2022 CA-S – Compton 2022
Scott is one of the better unsigned seniors in the LA area. He’s a natural forward who can score in a variety of ways. He’s active around the rim, crashing the offensive glass for put-backs. He has good footwork and good ball-handling abilities to get himself to the rim. He knows how to take advantage of smaller defenders in the post; gets good position and seals off his man. He does a good job operating in the mid-post area and has a nice little turnaround jumper.
2. Deshawn Gory – Hillcrest 2024
Gory is a player I first saw back during early club play in March and he’s improved tremendously since then. He’s really worked on his shooting and has become a very consistent shooter from three-point range when open. Can also hit the midrange jumper. He’s now able to handle the ball in transition and is able to go coast to coast and finish. Looks to finish strong at the rim. He can take defenders off the dribble when they closeout on him on the perimeter.
3. Elijah Price Elijah Price 6'8" | PF St. Anthony | 2022 State CA-S – St. Anthony 2022
What stood out the most to me about Price was his defensive ability. He’s a very versatile defender who can guard wings on the perimeter as well as be an interior shot blocker. He uses his length well and gets quite a few deflections. Offensively, he does a good job moving without the ball and making good cuts to the rim. He can draw contact and get to the free-throw line. He’s also able to be effective with the ball in his hands and looking to score off the dribble.
4. Bryce Cofield – West Ranch 2025
An incoming freshman, Cofield looks like he can make an immediate impact this season. He’s got a strong slashing game. He’s comfortable attacking defenders off the dribble and looking to score. He’s able to get to the rim and looks to finish strong. Ability to draw fouls and get to the free throw line. He has good defensive instincts. He has long arms and gets into a proper defensive stance. Definitely a player to watch out for this season.
