A tough, physical guard who doesn’t back down from anyone on either end of the floor, Dolphin is the type of competitor who is going to pick up opposing ball-handlers fullcourt in a showcase event like this and make them earn every last inch of space that they get. He plays hard on every possession, and is willing to mix it up with bigger players in the paint when he gets switched. He sees the floor well and is a solid ball-handler who loves to get others involved.
Casey Gardner Casey Gardner 5'8" | PG Dunkerton | 2023 State IA (Dunkerton)
A true pass-first lead guard, Gardner has excellent court vision and is a creative passer who can fit tough passes into tight spaces that few other players in the state would even attempt. He puts a large majority of his passes directly into the shooting pocket of his teammates, making it easy for them to get their shot off quickly. He can shoot it from deep and is a quality pick-and-roll guard who can turn the corner and get to the bucket, find the roll man, or step behind the screen and knock down shots.
Chuck Epperly Chuck Epperly 6'0" | PG Valley | 2023 State IA (Valley)
A solid lead guard who can both score and facilitate, Epperly didn’t go hunting for his shot like many do in a showcase event like this one. Instead, he looked to push the tempo when the opportunity presented itself and get his teammates good looks. He is in constant motion, whether he has the ball in his hands or not, which makes him a difficult player to defend, and he’s a good communicator on both ends of the floor, which is something that you definitely look for in a point guard.
Cade Littlefield Cade Littlefield 6'1" | PG Waukee | 2023 State IA (Waukee)
Littlefield has a really good feel for the game and does a great job playing with pace. He never gets sped up and out of control, and he handles on-ball pressure well. He’s a solid perimeter shooting threat, and he does a great job utilizing ball fakes to freeze the defense for a split second to blow by and get to the rim, where he’s a solid finisher with either hand. He sees the floor well and understands defensive positioning.
William Kiburis William Kiburis 6'4" | PG Gladbrook-Reinbeck | 2023 State IA (Gladbrook-Reinbeck)
A lead guard with good size and length, the most impressive thing about Kiburis’ game on Saturday was his willingness to take smaller defenders down onto the block and use that as his playmaking area. He has good court vision and is a willing passer off of his post touches, but he also has the touch and footwork to score on the block as well. He’s a solid finisher around the rim who rebounds at a high level, and he has a nice mid-range game as well. It was a strong showing for the small-school standout on both ends of the floor, as he also used that length to get up into passing lanes and make life difficult for the opposition.
Sean Murphy Sean Murphy 6'0" | PG Waukon | 2023 IA (Waukon)
Murphy is an excellent ball-handler who has the ball on a string and he uses it to break down the defense and get into the paint for finishes. He’s an excellent shooter off the dribble, getting the ball into his shooting pocket quickly, and he sees the floor well and is a creative passer.
