Continue ReadingAs we continue through our positional breakdowns series, we move on to the top CG in the 2023 class in Ohio. These players each have the ability to play either on or off ball from the guard position. Lots of scholarship talent waiting to break out during their Junior season is featured in this article.
Chico Johnson Chico Johnson 6'2" | SG Toledo Central Catholic | 2023 State OH , 6’2 CG 2023 Toledo Central Catholic: Johnson is one of the better defenders in the state for his class. A great wingspan and quick feet, he really excels in a full-court pressure system. Johnson’s offensive game has gone through ups and downs while I’ve monitored his development. I think his jumper mechanics are really smooth but there are times where Johnson goes ice cold from the outside. I’ve seen him mostly play off ball alongside Michael Greenlee Michael Greenlee 5'10" | PG Toledo Central Catholic | 2023 State OH Jr at both Toledo Central Catholic and with C2K, but I think he’s more than capable of playing on ball at the next level. Johnson is a good decision maker and can open up some interesting bigger line-ups if you play him at the point. I’ll be interested to see how Johnson develops and scores at the 17U level next Spring/Summer.
Lance Hayes Lance Hayes 6'4" | SG St. Vincent-St. Mary's | 2023 State OH , 6’4 CG 2023 STVM: Hayes has been hiding on the bench with STVM during his first two seasons, but is ready to break out as a Junior. He’s a perfect example of playing for a great high school program and high level grassroots program eventually paying off. PPG your Freshman and Sophomore year isn’t as important as development and Hayes is developing into a mid-major type prospect. Gaining his first offers after an impressive Peach Jam run by All Ohio Red 16U. Playing for these programs also give scouts and colleges more opportunities to watch a players development. I expect Hayes to start for STVM next season and become a household name in NEO HS basketball circles. I’d like to see him become more consistent with his jumper, but the physical traits and ball-handling plus passing is already there.
Terrance Pankey Jr Terrance Pankey Jr 6'0" | PG Ursuline | 2023 State OH , 6’1 CG 2023 Ursuline: Pankey quickly became one of my favorite players in the state this summer, the intensity he plays with every time he steps on the floor is very high. Pankey is looking to get to the paint every time he touches the ball, relentlessly attacking the basket. I think at this point I’d rather play Pankey next to a point guard, but I wouldn’t bet against him becoming a guy who plays a majority of point guard at the next level. Pankey has a great chance to be the first Division I prospect from the Youngstown area in a couple years.
Bede Lori Bede Lori 6'2" | SG Caldwell | 2023 State OH , 6’2 CG 2023 Caldwell: One of the top scorers in the state, Lori is already above 1,000 points for his high school career. His best evaluation settings have been with C2K, playing with Chico Johnson Chico Johnson 6'2" | SG Toledo Central Catholic | 2023 State OH and other talented guards. Lori does score the basketball at the shoe circuit level, he is one of the top shooters in the state. Lori almost broke the state record for consecutive free-throws made during his Sophomore season. Lori needs to get better at creating his own shot against higher level athletes and become quicker so he can break defenders down off the bounce. If Lori can improve on these skills, he could get some Division I interest next spring/summer.
Kyler D’Augustino Kyler D’Augustino 6'1" | CG Albany Alexander | 2023 State OH 2023 Alexander: Another southeast Ohio stud, D’Augustino is another guy who has been getting buckets since his freshman season. D’Augustino is a polished scorer from the mid-range area. Another question mark with a prospect who dominates small school competition is how he handles better athletes. D’Augustino had his ups and downs for Mid Ohio Pumas Gold 16U this summer, having some big time scoring games and making little impact depending on the game I watched. Next summer will be key for his recruitment from regional scholarship programs.
