After a slow recruiting month in August in terms of news, there has been a decent amount over the last week that we’ll take a look at in this week’s recruiting notebook.
COMMITMENTS
2022 St. John’s (DC)/ DC Premier wing Christian Watson Christian Watson 6'6" | SF St. John's | 2022 State #121 Nation MD announced his commitment to Miami. Watson took his official visit to Miami over the weekend and it seemed as if head coach Jim Larranaga and staff earned the commitment during the visit. Watson witnessed an uptick in his stock over the summer because of his play on the UAA Circuit as many high major programs hoped to earn a chance to snag the 6-foot-7 wing. His final three schools consisted of Miami, Georgetown and Marquette.
2023 Bishop Walsh/Prospect U forward Malik Bowman Malik Bowman 6'7" | PF Bishop Walsh | 2023 MD announced that he will sign with Overtime Elite and skip the final two years of high school. Bowman had recently released his top 10 school list, which included Overtime Elite, but didn’t waste much time in signing with the newly launched sports league for a reported $1.1 million. Bowman is a 6-foot-8 southpaw who has developed into a versatile threat on the offensive end. Bowman has a high ceiling with his frame and ability and felt that being around a professional atmosphere could help him reach that potential the quickest.
OFFERS
2022 Bishop Walsh/Team Melo forward Gavin Walsh Gavin Walsh 6'7" | PF Loyola Blakefield | 2022 State MD added another offer to his list as Columbia extended an offer to him on Tuesday. The 6-foot-7 forward now holds seven offers in total and could see that list grow sooner rather than later as more programs monitor him closely at Bishop Walsh.
2022 Bishop O’Connell/ DC Premier point guard Paul Lewis was offered by St. Francis (PA). Since announcing that he would reopen his recruitment after verbally committing to Maryland, the 6-foot-2 lead guard has received offers from Merrimack, NJIT and UMass-Lowell.
2023 Calvert Hall/Team Thrill guard Mike Williams Mike Williams 6'3" | CG Bishop Walsh | 2023 State #141 Nation MD received an offer from George Mason. Williams took advantage of the live evaluation period in July on the UAA Circuit and more mid-to-high major programs are getting involved. Williams also has offers from LSU, DePaul, George Washington, UMass, McNeese State and East Carolina.
2024 St. John’s (DC)/Team Takeover forward Donavan Freeman Donavan Freeman 6'9" | PF IMG Academy | 2024 #34 Nation FL took an unofficial visit to Syracuse over the weekend and legendary head coach Jim Boeheim extended an offer to the 6-foot-9 Waldorf native. Yesterday he added an offer from Xaiver. Freeman also holds offers from Maryland, Georgetown and Old Dominion. With an increased role as a sophomore, I expect this list to grow quickly with power five programs getting into the mix.
VISITS
2022 DeMatha/Team Durant guard Rodney Rice Rodney Rice 6'4" | CG DeMatha | 2022 State #89 Nation MD will take an official to Virginia Tech. Rice has one other official visit scheduled for this month at Louisville. We could be getting an announcement from the 6-foot-3 scoring machine shortly after.
2023 St. James/Team Takeover guard Solomon Ball Solomon Ball 6'3" | CG Brewster Academy | 2023 State #106 Nation NLG will take an unofficial visit to Pittsburgh on Saturday.
2023 Calvert Hall/Team Thrill guard Mike Williams Mike Williams 6'3" | CG Bishop Walsh | 2023 State #141 Nation MD will take an unofficial visit to George Mason, who just offered Williams, this Friday.
2024 Brewster/Team BBC forward Gabe Grant completed an unofficial visit with Miami yesterday.
Whitmore Update
The top prospect in our 2022 MD/DC rankings, Cameron Whitmore Cameron Whitmore 6'7" | PF Archbishop Spalding | 2022 State #30 Nation MD , announced his top three schools that he would be moving forward with. Villanova, North Carolina and Illinois all made the cut. The 6-foot-7 wing has completed official visits with all three programs and although there has been no released date as to when he will announce a commitment, there are rumors swirling that this battle could come down between Villanova and North Carolina.
