I made my way east to Altamonte Christian to watch some of Orlando’s top teams square off in the Loyalty Fall League. The gym was small and completely filled making for a great atmosphere. Although most teams participating had several players missing, in large part because they are playing football, it was still an entertaining evening. These were some of the players who stood out:
Jones
Although Jones lost a significant amount of their team to graduation, the pieces are still in place for a competitive season. There’s enough size and athletes here to have a successful season. 2023 6-4 wing Jalon Cole Jalon Cole 6'2" | CG Jones | 2023 FL is getting used to his new school after transferring in this fall. He made big plays all game long, scoring in transition and battling for second chance points. He hit key free throws down the stretch and grabbed the most important rebound of the game. His versatility both offensively and defensively will be valuable for the Tigers this season. Same goes for 2023 6-2 SF Austin Rolle. The junior wing was great defensively on the boards and finished well in transition. He also showed off a nice floater in the first half. 2023 6-8 Center Terrell Anderson manned the middle giving Jones a different look from the previous season. The big man buried defenders in the post and his teammates found him on post ups often. He easily had over 10 rebounds.
Edgewater
With Jaylen Smith Jaylen Smith 5'11" | PG Edgewater | 2023 State FL sitting out, I was able to get a look at what the rest of the Edgewater team had to offer against Jones. 2024 6-2 PG Erik Taylor Erik Taylor 6'1" | CG Edgewater | 2024 State FL looked much more physically developed since the last time I saw him as a freshmen at Winter Park, he stands at least 3 inches taller and has filled out his frame.. It seems that he has adjusted easily to his new coach and teammates. Throughout the game, he got into the paint drawing the help and kicked out to open shooters often. The young point man has solid handles and a jump shot to go with it. His overall feel for the game in terms of when to pass and when to shoot is what impressed me the most. ….2025 6-4 Wing Knowah Cousins looked like a freshmen ready to make an impact on varsity. He sank a couple 3 pointers, rebounded the ball well, and had a few impressive finishes close to the basket.
Oak Ridge
Tradition never graduates at Oak Ridge and the Pioneers look ready to be an Orlando heavy weight yet again. It all starts with 2022 6-3 PG Fabio Basili Fabio Basili 6'2" | CG Oak Ridge | 2022 State FL . The point guard makes the game look easy crossing up defenders, and spinning his way to the basket. He is an elite passer who simply sees things before they happen, and keeps his teammates engaged. He showed off his step back on multiple occasions, and anticipated well on defense. With seconds remaining Basili scored the game winning basket.……. 2024 6-5 F Tyler Johnson Tyler Johnson 6'6" | SF Oak Ridge | 2024 State #175 Nation FL is easily one of the best sophomores in the city. He rebounds his area well, and was showing off some solid footwork in the post. He also seems skilled enough to play out on the perimeter some as well, with a jump shot that is more than respectable. …….2025 5-9 PG Jaylen Reece showed know fear playing against one of Orlando’s top teams in Lake Highland Prep. He sank a few 3-pointers and displayed the ability to run an offense. It’s very easy to tell he is the son of a coach based on his IQ.
Lake Highland Prep
If this game is any indication of what is to come this season, 2022 6-6 SF Brice Sensabaugh Brice Sensabaugh 6'6" | PF Lake Highland Prep | 2022 State #104 Nation FL may lead Orlando in scoring. He used his large frame to his advantage either bullying his way to the basket, or to create space off the dribble to score from all over the court. He has mastered the step back, sinking a few 3-pointers throughout the game, and he had to account for at least 75 percent of his teams scoring.
Olympia
2023 6-1 PG Edgerrin James Jr. was not resting on his laurels after recently receiving an offer from Georgetown. The Point guard showed off his ability to shoot off the dribble, especially from beyond the 3-Point line and facilitated the offense well….2022 6-6 PF Clodner Pierre is my prediction to be Orlando’s most improved player this season. The forward does all the little things that don’t show up on the stat sheet, and he rebounds the ball and scores in close to the basket efficiently. He has been in the rotation the past two seasons for Olympia, and his upside and athleticism are evident….2023 6-8 C Jackson Outlaw Jackson Outlaw 6'8" | SF Olympia | 2023 State FL brings a dimension that Olympia has lacked in previous years: a shot swatting, rebounding, dunking big man. The young center altered even more shots than he blocked and he finished the game with a big two handed jam in the second half.
Downey Christian
2023 6-3 PG Joviel Acevedo looks like he is in for a productive season for Downey Christian in his first season with the varsity national team. He has great size and length at the point guard position and he made several smart decisions with the basketball throughout the game. The fluid athletes best days of basketball are ahead of him.
