Continue ReadingMal Mundy and his Hoopfest Tour brand opened the Team Sportsplex to some of the best freshmen and sophomores across the state of Louisiana. With over 130 participants in the gym, there was a wealth of talent playing in the three court complex. In this article, I will take a look at some of the well known sophomores and the unknown freshman who played well early in the day.
Trey’Dez Green Trey’Dez Green 6'8" | PF Zachary | 2024 State #54 Nation LA (6’7″ / East Feliciana / ’24)
Green showed how he could dominate on both ends of the floor during the early sessions. He was wonderful with his help side defense blocking several shoots from driving guards and altering others. Green was also good on defending guards and wings on the perimeter. On offense, he displayed his strength finishing through contact several times. His face up game is is superb as well and he finished with dunks numerous times. For a rishing sophomore, his game is very advanced and will only get better.
Jordan Comanche Jordan Comanche 6'6" | CG Wossman | 2024 State LA (6’4″ / Wossman / ’24)
Comanche looked even better than he did in June playing for Wossman. He’s a legit 6’4″ (and still growing) that can rebound and push. His handle in the open floor is pretty solid and he gets to the rim with ease. His second jump is what helped him command the boards at times during the early sessions. Comanche made his mark offensively and defensively. Needless to say he began the day well in Baton Rouge.
Jeremiah Evans Jeremiah Evans 6'10" | C Southwood | 2024 State #249 Nation LA (6’8″ / Southwood / ’24)
Defensively, Evans killed a lot of dreams at the rim. His timing and length allowed him to block everything from jumpers to layups. Offensively, he is a very willing screener and passed very well from the high post and the wing to cutters and shooters. Evans also showed a good stroke from three. His game is evolving and his morning in Baton Rouge was evidence of that.
Jovanni Perez Jovanni Perez 6'3" | CG Crescent City | 2024 State LA (6’0″ / Shaun Dumas Academy / ’24)
Perez is a very good point guard in the making. His morning consisted of drives to the rack where he left defenders in the dust. His handle is super quick and he used stop-and-go moves and hesis to get into the paint. Perez can finish at the rim with either hand which makes him ultra dangerous. He will be a guard to watch if he continues to play as he did during the morning session.
Jordan Milford (5’10″ / Tioga / ’25)
If Milford plays the way he played this morning in Baton Rouge, I will be surprised if he is not the Tioga starting point guard when the season begins. Milford has superb vision and made passes we usually see from more mature preps. He was patient making pocket passes on the pick-and-roll and gave perfect passes to players running the wing in transition. His ability to handle the rock and get by his initial defender was high level as well. His game is very good for an incoming freshman. Milford is one that will make his mark against whomever he plays.
Braylen Clark Braylen Clark 5'8" | PG Evangel | 2024 State LA (5’9″ / Evangel / ’24)
Clark is a true point guard and commands everything on the floor when he is on it. He knows how to pressure the gaps and make pinpoint passes to wing shooters. Clark also spaces the floor on the break and makes proper passes to whoever is running the wing. His pace and decision-making is what separated him from other point guards in the early session. Clark’s playmaking ability was very impressive early on.
The Frosh/Soph Academy began the day with a bang. Even with number of kids in the venue, the sessions went off without a hitch. I can see this event becoming an annual event where sophomores and freshmen gauge their skills against others. Mal Mundy has pulled off another top tier event in Louisiana.
