Continue ReadingThe second weekend of play at the 2021 Competitive Edge High School Fall League featured several highly anticipated matchups. This week the basketball action was much more fluid and eye pleasing as the players appear to have knocked the rust off their full court games.
Below is a review of prospects who played well during the second weekend of action in the Competitive Edge High School Fall League.
Lanier Baird – 5’9” / Senior / Renaissance Academy / Team 150 / Combo Guard: This extremely fast backcourt prospect scored at all three levels while posting 15+ points to go along with 3 steals, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists. His next level scoring abilities are obvious right away, but an underappreciated element of his skill set is that he owns a solid feel for the game. Therefore, Baird rarely forces the scoring action and frequently looks to get his teammates involved.
Dylan Blair Dylan Blair 5'10" | PG Downingtown West | 2023 State PA – 5’11” / Junior / Downingtown West / Philly Pride National UAA / Combo Guard: One of the most electric point guards in southeastern Pennsylvania continues to impress. Blair is a nearly complete player at both ends of the floor and his entire skill set was on display this past weekend. To go along with his extremely polished skill set, Blair owns a high basketball IQ. His relentless motor and unselfish style of lead guard play sets an excellent tone for this Whippets squad.
Jake Kapp – 6’3” / Junior / Boyertown / Eastern PA Elite / Wing: A rotation player as a sophomore, during the 2021-22 season Kapp will be expected to make significant contributions. On Saturday it appeared he is ready for that challenge. Kapp can score at all three levels, but what really grabs your attention is the way he can play downhill and relentlessly attack the rim. Once Kapp is at the tin, he has the physical build to score through contact with either hand. To keep the defense honest, he sprinkled in a couple of threes. Kapp netted 22 (or so) points as he guided Boyertown to a win over Archbishop Carroll.
Kalil Lawson – 6’3” / Senior / Upper Merion / East Coast Power / Small Forward: Lawson is a high energy “glue guy” who had a significant impact for UM on both ends of the floor in their win over Downingtown West. On offense he contributed by driving the ball to the cup and finishing through contact. At the defensive end Lawson’s length and quickness enabled him to register a few blocks as well as a couple of steals. Additionally, he played outstanding team defense. Lawson should provide meaningful minutes for the Vikings during this upcoming high school season.
Michael Walz Michael Walz 6'11" | PF Conestoga | 2022 State PA – 6‘9” / Senior / Conestoga / Philly Pride National UAA / Power Forward: One of the top big men in the area, Walz used his dominant interior and mid-range games to propel ‘Stoga to a victory over Great Valley. On one trip down the floor Walz established position in the low post and then muscled past a defender for a bucket. On the next trip, Walz used his face up game to score via a mid-range jumper off two dribbles. On a third trip, he scored out of a pick-n-roll set. His bag of tricks is versatile and deep. As a bonus, he dominated the defensive glass. Walz will be among the preseason favorites to win 2021-22 Central League POY. He is committed to Richmond.
