Continue ReadingI got to watch a lot of basketball this spring and summer, and there were a lot of players in New Mexico that stood out while playing in both local, and national tournaments! Summer is over, and with only a few fall events left the start of the high school basketball season is right around the corner. Offseason workouts are in full swing, and the preseason is only about 60 days away. Here is a breakdown of the top 10 wings from our recent Class of 2022 update.
- SF 6’6 Sean Johnson Sean Johnson 6'6" | SF Sandia | 2022 State NM , Sandia: Johnson enters his senior year coming off a great junior season where he averaged , and was selected to the All-State First team, and named District Player of the year. He is an athletic wing that thrives in transition, an extremely versatile defender, and rebounder when his motor is going. Sean has improved his ball skills and shooting ability a lot since his entering high school, and will be key to leading Sandia to another playoff appearance with hopes of a deep run.

, ABC Prep: “Tai” is one of the most intriguing prospects in the entire state. At 6’6 he can defend both guards and wings, has a really smooth jump shot that he can knockdown with range, and has the ability to be a primary playmaker. He has decided to transfer to ABC Prep after starting three seasons at Mayfield, which should lead to more college offers. Currently holds a division 2 offer from Northern New Mexico.
- SF 6’3 Scotty Mullin Scotty Mullin 6'3" | SF Alamagordo | 2022 State NM , Alamogordo: Mullin is a newcomer to our rankings after having a really good junior season being named to all district first team, and helping Alamogordo place 2nd in the district. He can shoot the ball from anywhere on the court, and can get hot in a moments notice.
- SG 5’11 Javier Mendoza Javier Mendoza 5'11" | SG Atrisco Heritage | 2022 State NM , Atrisco Heritage: Javier burst onto the scene last season as a major contributor for the Jaguars. He is a streaky shooter that lights it up when he’s hot, a very willing defender, and a solid secondary playmaker. He will be looked upon to help lead this years team back to the state playoffs.
- SF 6’3 Keagan Caton Keagan Caton 6'5" | SF Rio Rancho | 2022 State NM , Rio Rancho: Caton really impressed last season finishing the season averaging 12 points and 3 rebounds per game. He will be the leader for the Rams this season, and don’t be surprised if we see a David Patterson type of transition in to his Senior year
