Here are a few of the top tandems to watch in 5 and 6A:
Maize (5A): Kyle Grill Kyle Grill 6'4" | CG Maize | 2022 State KS , 6-foot-6 guard, 2022, and Avery Johnson Avery Johnson 6'2" | CG Maize | 2023 KS , 6-foot-3 guard, 2023:
This is going to be one of the most talented and athletic combos in the state next year, as well as one of the most hotly recruited. Grill will look to follow in his brother’s footsteps, checking out D1 schools. Long, athletic guys who can shoot it like Grill are special. Then there’s Johnson. He led the state champs in scoring as a sophomore, and basketball isn’t his best sport.
Topeka West (5A): Elijah Brooks Elijah Brooks 6'3" | CG Topeka West | 2022 State KS , 6-foot-2 guard, 2022, and Zander Putthoff Zander Putthoff 6'4" | SG Topeka West | 2022 State KS , 6-foot-4 guard, 2022:
This would be a classic driver/shooter tandem, except that both these guys are capable of doing a lot more from a versatility standpoint. They are different, but equally fine athletes. Brooks is an explosive driver from end to end who can elevate and finish in impressive fashion. Putthoff is a long wing who can help defensively and on the boards with his length. But he’s one of the better shooters around and will probably be featured even more this season.
Junction City (6A): Howard Johnson Howard Johnson 6'0" | SG Junction City | 2022 State KS , 6-foot-1 guard, 2022, and Terrence Tedder Jr Terrence Tedder Jr 6'0" | SG Junction City | 2022 State KS , 6-foot guard, 2022 (pictured):
This is going to be one of the quickest and slickest guard tandems around. These guys can both push the ball with great tempo and get to the hole. Johnson has really impressed on the club circuit this summer, and he gets it done both on the drive and shooting from the perimeter. Tedder is a nightmare to contain in the open court and he will keep the Blue Jays moving at top speed.
Wichita Northwest (6A): Geremiah Moore Geremiah Moore 5'9" | CG West | 2022 State KS , 5-foot-10 guard, 2022, and Demarcus Hoover, 6-foot-1 guard, 2022:
A couple of tough and rugged guards will be back for Northwest. Moore handles the point and gets the ball to teammates. He averaged 8.3 points and dished out 2.9 assists as a junior on a good 6A club. Hoover is an inside-out guy who draws a lot of fouls and rebounds well for his size. He produced 7.1 points and 2.5 boards last year. They are handsy and active at the defensive end too.
