They know what to say, at just the right time. They put their team ahead of their own stats, and they ensure that others around them succeed.
Here are some of those figurative ‘coaches on the floor’ on the small high school level:
Anders Dewey, 5-foot-10 guard, 2022, Plainville HS:
Dewey demonstrated this summer with Western Kansas Elite that he can run a team against top-level competition. His numbers from last year at Plainville certainly back that up. Dewey dealt 3.5 assists per contest as a junior, to go with more than 11 points and 5 rebounds. He’s one of those multi-sport gamers who show the way for their team.
Jaxon Hurla, 5-foot-8 guard, 2022, St. Marys HS:
All the Hurlas know how to play the game right. This season, Jaxon will provide the leadership for St. Marys as the most experienced returner. He showed with SSA Hoops Elite this summer that he can provide that steady leadership to a club team as well. He is a solid ball handler who knows what his coaches want to happen.
Emmitt Jueneman Emmitt Jueneman 6'1" | SF Hanover | 2022 State KS , 6-foot-1 guard, 2022, Hanover HS:
Jueneman is the type of athlete who can do everything a small school program needs. Shut down a top opponent? Handle the point? Rebound? Score in the post? There is so much talent around Jueneman at Hanover, he doesn’t always have to be the star. But when the chips are down, there is no question who is the leader or the 1A Div. 2 state champs.
Brekyn Ratzlaff Brekyn Ratzlaff 6'0" | PG Hillsboro | 2023 State KS , 6-foot guard, 2023, Hillsboro HS (pictured):
Ratzlaff showed in the 2A state championship that no moment is too big for him. He was the unquestioned star of the first half of that game. He runs the point with style and with swagger. He is a brilliant ball handler who is always in charge. Ratzlaff makes plays at both ends with his athleticism and intelligence, and loves to get the ball to a teammate in position for a score.
Brett Sarwinski Brett Sarwinski 5'10" | PG Galena | 2022 State KS , 5-foot-10 guard, 2022, Galena HS:
Arguably the best guard in the small school ranks, Sarwinski can do it all from the point spot. When his team needs points, he scores in bunches. But he also gets everyone involved and provides leadership. Sarwinski is tough and determined and plays with an understanding of the game.
