We’ll continue to ramp up the recruiting updates going forward, but here are some nuggets that we’ve gathered in the past few weeks.
COMMITMENTS
2021 Mt. Carmel/Team Melo center Kevin Kalu Kevin Kalu 6'10" | C Mt. Carmel | 2021 State MD announced his commitment to UTEP. The 6-foot-8 big man was a force in the shortened season last winter for the Cougars and won BCL Defensive Player of the Year. This spring and summer while running with Team Melo on the EYBL Circuit, Kalu caught the eyes of mid major program with his relentless motor, his willingness to dunk anything around the rim and his communication on the defensive end.
2022 Gonzaga/ DC Premier wing Jared Turner Jared Turner 6'8" | SF Gonzaga | 2022 State MD committed to Northeastern. In Turner, the Huskies are getting a 6-foot-7 wing who can make shots from the perimeter, and high IQ player and a hardworking defensive weapon. Turner was a key piece for DC Premier this spring and summer acting as a catalyst on the defensive end. He seems to always be in the right spot at the right time. Turner should have a strong senior campaign for Gonzaga this winter.
2022 Good Counsel/Team Takeover guard Dylan Williamson Dylan Williamson 6'0" | CG Good Counsel | 2022 State MD will be heading to Towson in the fall of 2022. The 6-foot-1 combo guard showcased his scoring ability throughout the DMV Live event during the June Live Period and put together a productive summer with Team Takeover.
OFFERS
2022 CJ Scott CJ Scott 6'4" | SF Archbishop Spalding | 2022 State MD received an offer from NJIT. The 6-foot-5 versatile guard/wing also holds an offer from UMBC and is primed for a big role at Archbishop Spalding this season.
2022 Bishop Walsh/Team Melo forward Gavin Walsh Gavin Walsh 6'7" | PF Loyola Blakefield | 2022 State MD added an offer from Navy this week. The 6-foot-7 forward made the switch to Team Melo and played on the EYBL Circuit this summer, proving his worth as a stretch four who can have a steady presence on the glass. Walsh also holds an offer from UMass.
2023 St. Mary’s/DMV Stags forward Aidan Harris Aidan Harris 6'6" | SF St. Marys | 2023 State #293 Nation MD received an offer from NJIT. Harris is a 6-foot-7 forward with versatility who caught attention with his play at DMV Live. St. Mary’s quietly dominated the MIAA B Conference last winter in a shortened season and should be the favorite to do so again in 2021-22. More eyes will be on this group and specifically Harris going forward. He also holds an offer from Quinnipiac.
VISITS
The top 2022 prospect, Cam Whitmore, completed an official visit to North Carolina last weekend. He’ll head to Illinois for his official this weekend before wrapping up his visit tour with Miami. The 6-foot-7 wing has emerged as a top target nationally after taking the summer by storm. Whitmore’s recruitment has remained extremely close to the vest, but I think when all is said and done, it may be a battle between North Carolina and Villanova for his commitment.
2022 Bishop Walsh/Team Melo point guard Bryce Lindsay Bryce Lindsay 6'2" | CG St. Frances | 2022 State MD scheduled a couple of official visits recently. He will head to Stillwater and visit Oklahoma State September 24-26. He’ll then head to Virginia Tech for an official October 1-3. I’d expect Lindsay to take at least one more official visit other than these two programs before coming to a decision.
2022 DeMatha/Team Durant point guard Rodney Rice Rodney Rice 6'4" | CG DeMatha | 2022 State #89 Nation MD announced that he will visit Virginia Tech officially on September 3 and Louisville on September 17. It seems like the Hokies and the Cardinals will fight it out, but I’d give the slight edge to the Hokies considering Rice’s relationship with the associate head coach Mike Jones, who left DeMatha this past season to accept the job at Virginia Tech.
