For 2021-22, the all-around 6-foot-1, 175-pound guard is surely someone you need to be aware of. The junior will be one of the top players in the Metro League to watch out for and a big reason why is how things ended for him and his Beavers teammates last season.
“We weren’t really supposed to be good this year,” Rice said. “But we stuck with it and we tried hard and worked hard every day in practice.”
Beaverton ended the year on a tear, capturing the Red Bracket title in culminating week with impressive wins over PIL powers Roosevelt and Grant and Pacific Conference champ Sherwood. Rice played a huge role in those wins, hitting big shots in big moments.
“Beginning of the season things started off pretty slow,” Rice said. “I was a role player and coming in with the seniors, especially Dane Erikstrup Dane Erikstrup 6'10" | C Beaverton | 2021 State OR , they played amazing this season. They mentored me and helped me develop my game.”
Watch Rice play and you will immediately notice how he plays with a great feel for the game. He’s a good shooter but can also put the ball on the floor and finish near the basket through contact. As much as Rice has improved with his game – he ended up averaging over 11 points per game as a sophomore – he knows there’s plenty more to develop.
“I’m still working on all of it,” Rice said. “Basketball is a hard sport and it takes a lot of time.”
This summer, Rice didn’t play club basketball but has been doing individual workouts with Oregon prep legend Jeremiah Dominguez. The connection is through Rice’s father Geoff, who played at South Salem and later on in college with Willamette. Playing at the next level is certainly the goal for the younger Rice.
“That’s always been a dream,” Rice said. “I’ve got two more years and we’ll see what happens.”
Rice currently ranks as the #28 player in the recently updated Class of 2023 rankings.
