Here are some Western Kansas guards to watch as we transition to school ball:
Pablo Bermudez, 6-foot guard, 2024, Cheylin HS:
The Cougars graduate standout seniors Colton McCarty Colton McCarty 6'0" | CG Cheylin | 2021 State KS and Andrew Schields, who take about 33 points per game with them. But Cheylin is blessed with a some really young talent that already started getting experience last year. Bermudez led the group of freshmen by scoring 9.0 points per contest. He was especially active on defense, ripping off 2.6 steals per game.
Israel Garcia-Rotolo, 6-foot guard, 2023, Liberal HS:
The senior-led Redskins have a lot of 2022s who can step up, but rising-junior Garcia-Rotolo was the most productive of all the returners. He was good for 4.2 points and 3.3 rebounds in a supporting role. His length and versatility should lead to bigger things this year.
Jonathan Hamel, 5-foot-9 guard, 2024, Stockton HS:
The Tigers played almost strictly seniors and freshmen last year. One of the freshmen who played the most, Hamel averaged 2.4 points as a rookie. With heavy losses, Hamel will try to lead a group of 2024s to build on their experience last year.
Tyson Jimenez, 5-foot-6 guard, 2022, Ellis HS:
Ellis loses two standout seniors in Brady Frickey Brady Frickey 5'10" | CG Ellis | 2021 State KS and Daniel Eck, who averaged 19.2 and 12.0 points respectively. But the cupboard isn’t completely bare. Jimenez was very productive across the board from the point guard spot, racking up 7.5 points, 3.1 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 1.2 steals.
Brock Keith, 5-foot-10 guard, 2024, Meade HS:
Meade loses star Vance Shewey Vance Shewey 6'4" | SF Meade | 2021 State KS , who averaged 19.2 points last season. But Keith was really good as a freshman for the Buffaloes as a freshman. He was a stat-sheet stuffer with 8.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.4 steals.
Logan McCarty, 5-foot-11 guard, 2024, Cheylin HS:
Joining Bermudez as a top-flight freshman guard last year was McCarty, who was a demon on defense, recording 3.1 steals per game. McCarty showed a lot of versatility, dishing out 2.6 assists, while also scoring 8.2 points of his own, and grabbing 2.6 boards.
