Throughout the week, I’ll be scanning the various classes and positions to talk about prospects who helped boost their stock with their play. I’ll start with the 2022 Baltimore guards.
Christian Winborne Christian Winborne 6'2" | CG Gilman | 2022 State #199 Nation MD | Gilman/Team Thrill
Winborne announced his college commitment prior to the UAA Finals as he’ll attend St. Joseph’s and play in the A-10. Throughout the month of July, he proved his worth in just about every aspect of the game, which made his commitment even more valuable for the Hawks. Winborne shot a high clip from three, displayed consistent dynamic play making skills as a lead guard and brought intensity on the defensive end of the floor. It comes to no surprise to say that he’ll have a chance to get consistent rotation minutes for St. Joseph’s following his senior year at Gilman.
Deon Perry Deon Perry 5'8" | PG Mt. Carmel | 2022 State MD | Mt. Carmel/Team Melo
Another prospect who came off the board was 5-foot-8 lead guard Deon Perry Deon Perry 5'8" | PG Mt. Carmel | 2022 State MD when he announced his commitment to head coach Tavaras Hardy and Loyola (MD). Perry caught the eyes of many during DMV Live in June and continued with strong outings throughout Peach Jam. Perry also capped off a productive EBA Summer League in postseason play where he showcased complete control over games while holding individual target practice from NBA range. A tactician in ball-screen scenarios, Perry is putting himself in strong position to a top point guard in the state and is an exceptional get for the Hounds.
Jordan Pennick Jordan Pennick 6'1" | CG Archbishop Spalding | 2022 State MD | Archbishop Spalding/Team Choo
It was long overdue, but Pennick received his first Division I offer recently from Navy. The 6-foot-1 combo guard is a dog at both ends of the floor and someone as a coach, you’d love to go to war with. Offensively he’s a shot-maker from deep off the catch, but can mix it up and finish through contact around the rim where he channels his inner football mentality. Defensively you’ll find Pennick guarding the other team’s top perimeter player and making life difficult in every fashion. A high-volume scorer and tenacious defender, Pennick also holds a Division II offer from Chestnut Hill and should see more coming his way sooner rather than later.
Nick Jones | Parkville/Runnin’ Mavs
Jones was a new find this summer and will be a key cog in Parkville’s attack this season. At 6-foot-1, Jones is rail thin but has arguably some of the most explosive athleticism you’ll find in the area. It allows him to play way above the rim in transition and throw down dunks that catch you off guard every time. He showed ability throughout the EBA Summer League to create space off the dribble and get his shot off from three, which he converted at a decent rate. He’s always looking to jump passes as an off-ball defender and despite his lack of muscle at this time, he’s more than willing to battle for defensive boards and spark transition opportunities himself. High level JuCo programs should be all over Jones as well as Division II programs.
Bryce Lindsay Bryce Lindsay 6'2" | CG St. Frances | 2022 State MD | Bishop Walsh/Team Melo
Lindsay was another Team Melo guard who enjoyed a productive showing throughout the Peach Jam experience and caught the eyes of many high-level programs with his long distance shooting. On July 31, he announced the top six programs that he will be moving forward with that include Marquette, Xavier, Virginia Tech, Oklahoma State, Georgetown and Texas A&M. The 6-foot-3 guard will be playing in the NIBC with Bishop Walsh this winter, which should to wonders for his continued development and further groom him into the point guard that the programs above will need him to be. When Lindsay has it going from three, the entire dynamic of the game he plays in changes, but he also showed his willingness to put the ball in the floor and finish around the basket when the opportunity presented itself.
