The top four players– Jaylin Stewart Jaylin Stewart 6'7" | SG Garfield | 2023 State #71 Nation WA , Cayden McDaniel Cayden McDaniel 6'3" | CG BFL Prep | 2023 State WA , Gavin Marrs Gavin Marrs 6'11" | PF Ellensburg | 2023 State WA , and Brooklyn Hicks Brooklyn Hicks 6'3" | CG Timberline | 2023 State #168 Nation WA — stayed locked in place, and then things get active. I’m talking players shifting up and down, new players being added, and a watchlist that’s potentially a coach’s goldmine.
I was really excited to see that SW Washington was well represented. Although mostly known for the Seattle hoop scene, Washington is a hoop state across the entire state. Check out these hoopers from the SW part of the state that went from unranked to ranked in the class of 2023.
#6 Parker Gerrits (6’2 PG, Olympia HS)
Parker Gerrits had an amazing summer and turned a lot of heads. So much so, that he went from unranked to #6 in the state for 2023. Parker is a crafty scoring guard. He changes speeds very well and has a deceptive first step. He plays off the catch well and, because of his ability to knock down the 3, lives in the paint. Gerrits can also hit the pull-up 3 in transition. Big stock riser in 2023.
#30 Andreas Engholm Andreas Engholm 6'8" | PF Olympia | 2023 State WA (6’7 PF, Olympia HS)
Andreas, high school teammate of Parker Gerrits, is another kid that went from unranked to ranked. Engholm’s size and skillset landed him at #30. He is a 6’7 stretch 4 that attacks the boards. He isn’t crazy athletic but he is very skilled. He is good in the pick and pop; he hits the three and is also skilled enough to put the ball on the floor to attack the paint. He has patience when in the post and a soft touch. Huge upside and stock riser. Keep your eyes on him, he may not be at the #30-spot next update.
#33 Kobe Parlin Kobe Parlin 6'1" | CG Mark Morris | 2023 State WA (6’1 CG, Mark Morris HS)
Kobe Parlin Kobe Parlin 6'1" | CG Mark Morris | 2023 State WA is coming off a great summer and it landed him at #33. He played up in 17U for GAME Winner and really started to find his stride by July. His skills and abilities translate to the next level. He has a shifty handle that keeps defenders off balance and frees him up for his middy pull-up. He is a strong driver and finishes through contact around the rim. He can consistently hit the spot-up three too. His buzz is growing; look for Parlin to have a big junior season.
#37 Cavin Holden Cavin Holden 6'1" | CG Ra Long | 2023 State WA (6’1 PG, RA Long HS)
Cavin Holden Cavin Holden 6'1" | CG Ra Long | 2023 State WA decided to sit out the second half of AAU to work on his game and still ended up on the Top 40 after being unranked. That just goes to show how good he is. Coaches if you need shooting, this is the guy. Cavin is a shooting specialist– one of the best in the state. He shoots it at a high percentage and has no problem launching it from the volleyball line. His IQ stands out when you watch how he moves without the basketball; he’s constantly finding open spots for kick-outs. The more he shows his scoring ability from the other two levels, the more he will climb this list.
#36 Deacon Dietz Deacon Dietz 6'3" | SG Mark Morris | 2023 State WA (6’2 SG, Mark Morris HS)
Deacon Dietz Deacon Dietz 6'3" | SG Mark Morris | 2023 State WA is one of the best athletes in this class and people are starting to take notice. He is a two-way guard with a high motor. His skills are still raw, but he is developing them at a fast rate which is a huge reason for him going from unranked to Top 40. He is good in transition; he can finish with either hand and above the rim. He has a solid handle, does a good job of getting straight-line drives, and is streaky from 3. He is active on the boards and plays physically defensively. He will continue to pop up on coach’s radars because of how hard he plays.
