Games were competitive, energy was high, and the players were having fun! It was a great hoop environment for sure. Check out these takeaways and standouts from the night.
TAKEAWAYS:
2022 Rome Hendrickson, 6-1 SG | Mark Morris HS— Rome can really shoot the rock. He hit 2-3 threes each game (that’s a lot when games are to 9 by 1s and 2s). He showed an improved ability to create shots for himself off the dribble too. Defenders would run him off the line and he made the right reads with pump fakes, jabs, and stepbacks.
2022 Tyler Hays, 5-9 PG | Kelso HS— Tyler looks like he has a new confidence about him. He lived in the paint and scored some tough finishes at the rim. He was the vocal leader on any squad he was on, directing and encouraging teammates. The skills that stood out the most were his motor and competitiveness. Even in open gym, he was competing on the defensive end and trying to win every game.
2024 Malakai Gray, 5-11 PG | Mark Morris HS— Malakai will be a college guard one day. He has a tight handle that keeps defenders on their heels; he got to his spots for pull-up jumpers whenever he wanted last night. He also showed some consistency hitting the spot-up 3, which is an area that he’ll need to complete his game.
STANDOUTS:
2023 Deacon Dietz, 6-1 SG | Mark Morris HS— Deacon Dietz was the star of the night. His ability to create shots for himself has improved. His athleticism stands out– he had multiple dunks in transition that were performed with ease. He floated over and around weakside defenders on his rim attacks. He is shooting the 3 with a lot more confidence too which is great to see.
2024 Lonnie Brown, 5-11 SG | RA Long HS— Lonnie Brown is a big-time shooter. It looks clean and it goes in. He didn’t show much else, but he didn’t need to. He was key in a lot of wins, hitting timely catch and shoot 3s. He did a good job of moving without the ball and finding open spots for kick-outs. He has the potential to be one of the best shooters in the state.
