Continue ReadingScout Source Hoops and Strive for Perfection Athletics jointly ran an Elite 50/50 showcase at Pro Fit Training in Bethesda, MD for local high school and middle school talent from the DMV to showcase their skills through combine testing, training, and full court games over a weekend. Hidden gems and under the radar talent were given a platform to make up for lost ground in their recruitment due to the coronavirus pandemic. We will introduce you to several standouts in this 3-part series from the Elite 50/50, let’s get started!
‘22 6’5 Tykee Peterson VA Havoc/Martin County
The high academic recruit (3.9) impressed with a well-rounded offensive and defensive game that doesn’t have many weaknesses. Pull-up elbow jumpers after ducking under a hasty closeout, runners in the paint, midpost fadeaways, drilling set shots from the perimeter, finesse finishes after euro-steps through traffic- his offensive game was successful against defenders of various sizes. Look for him to be one of the most underrated players in Kentucky.
‘22 6’ Devin Walker Devin Walker 6'0" | PG Blue Ridge | 2022 State VA VA Elite/Blueridge School
Walker controls the tempo offensively, showing great leadership and communications skills as he directs traffic on both ends for his team. A very crafty passer that is shifty off the bounce, his drives routinely draw the drop defender his way to free up his big on the block for an easy dime and finish at the rim. Walker understands how to shift guards and time his drives to be coming off the screen at the perfect moment to either dish to a teammate or rise up in the paint to finish. Walker can hit shots from the perimeter and is a good point of attack defender- routinely getting under his assignment to speed him up or force a turnover.
‘22 6’10 Cooper Bowser Cooper Bowser 6'8" | C John Paul the Great | 2022 State VA Durant/St John Paul the Great
Bowser is a supreme athlete with great length, very active on the offensive glass and defensively in the paint. I liked his understanding of positioning, carving out space with his shoulders and using his pivot to create easier scoring angles around his defender. He showed an ability to knock down contested midrange jumpers or take his matchup off the bounce with long, quick strides. As his body continues to develop and fill out, I think he will be a very well-rounded player at both ends of the floor with great upside.
‘23 6’5 Khyelle Ingram Team Trezz/Kipp Gaston College Prep
Khyelle uses his size and strong frame to bully defenders on his way to the basket, playing through contact and finishing well on drives at the basket. His athleticism and aggressive style of play puts constant pressure on his matchup and help defenders to be in the right spot because once the freight train gets going- he’s very hard to stop. These aggressive drives to the basket open up the space and opportunity needed to get off a smooth jumper from the perimeter- he didn’t take many but when he did, he converted at a high clip. Defensively, his size and foot speed allow him to guard everything from shooting guards to small ball 5’s. He’s able to anticipate movement well and wall up defensively in his opponent’s path to cut off drives to the basket or contest shots around the hoop.
Additonal names that impressed:
’24 6’8 Odell Goodman TTC/Churchill Academy
Voted the defensive player of the week, athletic, great length and size, runs the floor, times rebounds and blocks well, instincts are advanced for his age
’24 6’ Adjatay “DJ” Abegesah Team Impact/Quince Orchard HS
Rebounds exceptionall well for his size, uses his frame to keep defenders away from the ball and bully defenders to the rim, always keeps his head up and finds the open man, plays unselfishly, tight handle, shoots well in the paint with floaters or step-through finishes off glass
