The 2024 class in the DMV is loaded and despite seeing its top prospect in Derik Queen take his talents to Montverde Academy, there are still plenty of highly talented players we can enjoy. One of those players is 2024 St. John’s/Team Takeover wing/forward Donavan Freeman Donavan Freeman 6'9" | PF St. John's | 2024 State MD . Freeman took an unofficial visit to Syracuse over the weekend and Prep Hoops Maryland caught up with him to discuss.

“It was really good, I learned a lot,” Freeman said about the visit. “I got to see a lot of the campus and talk a lot with the coaches. I learned a lot from talking with Coach Boeheim.”

At the conclusion of his visit the Hall of Fame coach extended an offer to Freeman.

“Man, it was an honor. Just receiving an offer from a coach of that caliber was special. It was motivating too.”

Freeman also holds offers from the likes of Maryland, Georgetown and Old Dominion.

Over the summer, he ran with Team Takeover’s 16U squad on the EYBL Circuit. Playing up an age group had a profound impact on his overall development.

“I played up, so I learned a lot. Honestly, I had to really make adjustments with me being young and adjusting to a role on such a good team like that. We lost in the final four. We came up short, so that was a really tough loss for us. We didn’t take it too well, but we’ll be ready for next year. I feel like the physicality and speed is the biggest difference playing up. The players’ IQ is much higher as well, so all of that stuff did a lot for me in getting better all around.”

Looking ahead to the winter, Freeman will play a vital role for St. John’s in the always loaded WCAC.

“Me personally, my only goal in mind is to win the conference. That’s always going to be my goal. We lost a couple of big pieces, but we’re at the point now where we just work with what we got and I like our chances with it.”

Freeman ranks as the No. 3 overall player in MD/DC 2024 rankings with Queen’s departure. He’ll likely stay put as the rankings are set to be updated in the coming weeks.
