Here are a few guards from the small schools who have turned heads this summer (in alphabetical order):
Anders Dewey, 5-foot-10 guard, 2022, Western Kansas Elite, Plainville HS:
Dewey is a tough left-handed guard who probes defenses to get into the lane and kick to shooters. He pushes the tempo and breaks down defenses in the transition game with his good handle and athleticism. Dewey is a solid floor leader who plays under control, yet with intensity.
Joel Ford, 6-foot guard, 2022, Western Kansas Elite, Phillipsburg:
Ford is a versatile guard who can bury shots from deep, making him more than just a point guard. But when he’s got the ball in his hands, he plays under control and makes good decisions. Ford has the multi-sport athleticism and toughness you often find at small Western Kansas schools.
Wesley Fair Wesley Fair 6'2" | CG Wichita Collegiate | 2023 KS , 6-foot-2 guard, 2023, TBB KS, Wichita Collegiate HS:
Fair is by no means an unknown. He gets to show what he can do with a lot of the top talent from the Wichita-area when he suits up for Team Buddy Buckets. The 3A star plays a versatile role for TBB, his physical talents lending to defense, rebounding and up-and-down play-making. He has good size and quickness to dominate an opponent.
Alexis Jimenez, 5-foot-10 guard, 2024, SSA Hoops Elite, Hugoton:
Jimenez is a quick ball handler who plays with his eyes up, anticipating where his teammates can make plays. He pushes the ball and distributes it effectively. He’s slender and athletic, able to knife through a defense and create opportunities. Jimenez is showing he might just be ready for a varsity role next year.
Allen Martinez Allen Martinez 5'8" | CG Lakin | 2022 State KS , 6-foot guard, 2022, Western Kansas Elite, Lakin HS:
Martinez has already established a reputation as a top small-school guard. But summer tournaments allow him to demonstrate what he can do to a different audience. He’s a top-notch shooter who plays with a ton of toughness and energy. Martinez will have an even bigger role at Lakin next season due to graduation.
