The hard-working 6-foot-4, 195-pound forward has been starting at Grant since he was a freshman and has been performing at a high level for the Generals ever since. Along the way he’s diversified his game from being purely a post player to developing more perimeter skills and it’s something that was completely intentional on his part.
“This year, I figure that at my size I needed to move out a bit and be able to shoot and I’ve finally started to get that down,” von Arx said. “But my heart’s inside – I’ve been there my whole life. So that’s what my bread and butter is.”
In helping lead Grant to the Oregon Madness championship, there’s no doubt that von Arx did most of his dominance in the paint. But he also showed that he’s done a lot of work on his outside shooting hitting a number of mid-range jumpers, as well as attacking the hoop from the elbow. It’s things he did all season as Grant put together a really good 2021 campaign.
“I feel like we had a tough season with the two losses to Jeff, but other than that we dominated and we showed that we were one of the top teams,” von Arx said. “Next year it’s going to be a different story. We’re going all the way.”
Before next season though, von Arx is looking forward to AAU basketball. He’ll be running with Oregon Prospects and he’s looking forward to the month of July.
“We’re going to try and go undefeated and we’re going to play as a team,” von Arx said. “Since it’s a new team, we’re going to try and get that chemistry going.”
The hope is that an increase in his college recruitment will occur. He notes that he’s currently hearing from Vermont – partially due to the connections with former Grant standout Aaron Deloney – but he’s open to more interest. And football remains an option too as he’s heard some from Cal.
“I’m looking for basketball mostly, but whichever I’m feeling is the best way to go is what I’ll do,” von Arx said. “I’d love to play either in college – it’s a great opportunity.”
von Arx and the Prospects are currently playing at the Cali-Live Summer Showcase in Irvine. He currently ranks as the #19 ranked player in the updated PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2022 rankings.
