Tyler Smith Tyler Smith 6'0" | SG Kenwood | 2023 State IL (Young and Reckless 16u)
Smith made was a difference maker in the opening game against the Iowa Barnstormers. He put tons of pressure on ballhandlers forcing numerous turnovers which converted into points. While down six in the final minutes of the game Smith made 2 pull ups three pointers and he even hit the eventual game winning bucket for Y&R..
Jabari Sanders (Work Foundation 17U)
The smaller lead guard plays with a lot of heart and determination. Sanders was very instrumental in setting up his teammates in a very close game with Illinois Attack. Jabari looked good getting in the lane and hitting dump off passes to his big men as well as creating for other guards on his team. Sanders had a key moment in the game when he scored seven straight points after a run from Illinois Attack. He hit a deep three, forced a steal, and scored off two mid-range pull up shots. Small schools should check him out on Saturday.
Julian Acosta (Illinois Attack 17U)
Physical guard who didn’t back down from city players in his matchup with The Work Foundation. Julian was able to get his game going from his defense. In several possessions he stopped Work Foundation guards on drives to the rim. He did a tremendous job at moving his feet and keeping players from getting around him and on several occasions he stole the ball and scored . On offense he used his body to finish in the lane through contact often. Acosta is a strong energy player who I can see getting better at a JUCO and making a name for himself.
Tim Handy (Swish 15U)
On what is a very talented 15u squad I walked away very impressed with Handy. He is very long at 6’4 with a strong upper body and has very good timing on defense. Tim made a few eye opening plays just from having good timing playing the passing lanes. He scored maybe 6 to 8 points alone getting his hands in passing lanes and creating deflections. For a player who has another 2 years left of summer basketball I can see the upside in Handy. Offensively he had some strong drives from the wing where he just scored through defenders off straight line attacks. Tim didn’t shoot many shots but the mechanics look solid and we would hope to see more confidence on his shot in the future.
Justin Mullins Justin Mullins 6'4" | SF Oak Park-River Forest | 2022 State IL (Y&R/Authentic Basketball)
Mullins kind of did everything in his first game against Iowa Barnstormers. He scored from all three levels consistently. It started with a couple corner threes and then it helped open up driving lanes because the Barnstormers started guarding him as a shooter so he made some strong takes to the bucket. As his offense was flourishing Mullins started getting after it on defense using his length to disrupt shots on closeout, he made a few steals on the ball and when away from the ball he seemed to always be around the rim to track down rebounds or help out teammates when defending the post. Justin played with so much freedom and confidence he landed an offer from Denver.
