There were a ton of notable performances at all levels but here we are going to focus on our Indiana 2023 prospects specifically. Time to take a look at some evaluations on our 2023 point guards.
Tyler Kerkhof Tyler Kerkhof 6'1" | PG Greenfield-Central | 2023 State IN – 6’0 PG – Greenfield-Central – INB 2023 Elite: Kerkhof is a lead guard with a long build. Played the floor general spot well and was showing off some impressive ball handling skills. Has a good first step on his attacks and showed the ability to play off the ball a little here. Shoots it pretty well with a quick release and had a nice step-back 15fter right in the defenders face. I think he got a little overlooked at times considering the amount of talent that was on his team but by watching him, I think he is the type of guard that can always be reliable in any given situation.
Landon Waeltz – 5’10 PG – McCutcheon – Indiana Ice 2023 Silver: Waeltz is a very short lead guard that has a pretty solid feel for the game. Shot the ball very well here from behind the arc and did a good job slipping away from the defense. His shorter size was not a huge problem this game since he was playing a team with not much size themselves and was pretty equal talent-wise but I am curious if he does not grow anymore if that will be a long term problem. One thing he absolutely needs to do is hit the weight room and add some strength to that frame. Waeltz played real well here and had one of the better shooting performances out of any lead guard I saw.
Chris Lucas Chris Lucas 5'10" | PG Harrison | 2023 State IN – 5’9 PG – Harrison – Indiana Ice 2023 Silver: Lucas is a shorter lead guard that had quick bursts of speed that looked hard to stop at times. Splits the defense real well and his quickness got him to the rim where he finished well for the most part. Shot the ball well from the outside but think his game is more of a drive/facilitate or drive/finish long term. Like his teammate Waeltz, if a growth spurt does not happen his shorter size could potentially be a problem in the long term but he was easily one of the more skilled players on the floor here. Lucas is a interesting prospect to watch these next couple of years.
Deaglan Sullivan Deaglan Sullivan 6'2" | PG Mishawaka Marian | 2023 State IN – 6’2 PG – Marian – Indiana Attack 2023 White: Sullivan is a taller lead guard that is pretty balanced all around. Real high motor and plays both ends with a ton of intensity. Was one the better defensive guards I saw on the day as he stole the ball a couple of times which resulted in some easy fast-break buckets. On offense, he displayed some nice ball handles while working his way to the rim and even mixed in some outside shooting as well. Just was so tough and made so many of those much needed hustle plays on both ends.
Kamari Slaughter Kamari Slaughter 6'2" | SG Cathedral | 2023 State IN – 6’4 PG – Portage – 94 Feet Elite 2023: Slaughter is taller lead guard that has so much skill in his arsenal. Played hard on both ends and on offense was tough to stop once he got heading towards the rim. Worked the baseline real well here and had one baseline drive that resulted in an And1. He is a lead guard that has the ability to score at a high level but also does a great job of getting his teammates involved and finding the open man. Quick, strong, athletic, tough, you name it, Slaughter checked all of the boxes here and continued to raise his stock.
Dawson Hundley Dawson Hundley 5'10" | PG Blackford | 2023 State IN – 6’1 PG – Blackford – Indiana Elite Swish 2023: Hundley is a tough lead guard that has looked to have put on some size and length since the last time I saw him. First standout for me was just how well he was rebounding on both ends and was giving Swish a good amount of second chance opportunities. Mixed it up a little on the offensive end with a couple pull-up jumpers but mostly scored around the rim here. On defense he showed the ability to defend the guard and forward spot and did so aggressively. Loved the energy Hundley was playing with and think he is going to have a breakout year coming up for Blackford.
Bryce Petty Bryce Petty 6'1" | PG Park Tudor | 2023 State IN – 6’1 PG – Park Tudor – EG10 2023: Petty is a lead guard that always works hard on the floor. Had a 3 off the catch when I watched him and was finishing well with his left-handed drives. Forced just a little too much at times but the effort on everything he was doing was at a high level. Loved how physical he was playing and was going at the defense with toughness. Really think Petty is in for a breakout year coming up.
Bauer Maple – 5’9 PG – Maconaquah – Miami Basketball Club 2023: Maple is a smaller lead guard that is pretty shifty. High IQ on the offense and was real solid at getting the defense off balance with a quick first step heading to the rim and dishing off to the post man. Also shot the outside jumper well and got down and defended also. Overall, Maple is a solid player that plays like a true lead guard and can run an offense very well.
Vynce Overshown – 5’9 PG – Hammond – NWI Tradition 2023: Overshown is a shorter lead guard that is very quick. Shot it from the outside well and loved how he followed nearly every one of his jump shots. Was aggressive crashing the glass and fought for rebounds against the bigger forwards. If he ever got out in transition then it was an easy bucket for him just because how quick he is. Need to see a little bit more of him but overall he looked pretty solid here.
Arlondo Hall Arlondo Hall 5'8" | PG Tindley | 2023 State IN – 5’7 PG – Charles A. Tindley Accelerated – DRIP Elite 16U: Hall is a tiny lead guard that lit it up from behind the arc. Surprisingly played off the ball a good amount here and defense lost track of him a ton it seemed like. Once he got away from the defense, he was always set up and ready to shoot and utilized a quick trigger to get his shot off. When he was on the ball, he did a good job in seeing the floor and feeding the post. A growth spurt is obviously going to help him in the long term but here his outside game looked as strong as anyone’s.
Devon Woods Devon Woods 5'10" | PG Pike | 2023 State IN – 5’10 PG – Pike – Team Teague 2023: Woods is a lead guard that does so much so well. Passes were sharp this game and found the cuts every time it seemed like. He is so quick and when he has the opportunity to push the tempo that seems to be where he is at his best based off of how well he sees the entire floor. Split the defense very well when the double-team came and his pull-up jumper was money. Woods is easily one of the top lead guards in the state and I am starting to be convinced that he can get a bucket anytime he wants to. Very high ceiling for Woods.
