During this series, we take a deep dive into teams that went overlooked during a busy Prep Hoops weekend. First up Sal Elite and Victory Academy. Two squads that have a lot of talent out of their respective areas.
Sal Elite 2024
Deandre Harper – As a thick framed 6-5 forward Harper ran the floor with some of the top guys in the 15U division. He scored through contact around the rim, hit his free throws, and knocked down a shot from distance. The 2024 big shows some promise as an inside-out presence.
Devin Holmon – Listed at 6-4 Holmon was dialed in from distance going 2 for 5. He has a quick release and hit both shots after coming off a screen. He used his height to score in the paint after two offensive rebounds.
Daleron Thomas – Thomas was worth the rewatch alone. The 5-10 guard is shifty with a nice bag of moves for someone his age. He creates space and consistently makes plays with it. His pull-up shooting and ability to finish at the rim helped him to score in double digits. Keep an eye out for his evolution as a passer. He’s able to see the court well and throw next level passes which will only get more dangerous as his feel increases.
Quientan McCafferty – One of the tallest kids in the division also stretches the floor. At 6-9, he uses his length and frame to secure rebounds on both ends of the court and block shots around the rim. The Nebraska native is still raw which makes him an intriguing prospect.
Trey Griggs – Griggs was the lone 2025 prospect on a court full of regionally respected 2024s. He’s another guard that creates space not so much with quickness but by manipulating his defender. He’ll get them going one way before hitting the breaks and changing directions. He’s a solid floor general that can initiate the offense and has a creative handle.
Victory Academy Gold
Malachi Drake – Drake is a top 30 prospect in the Texas 2024 class according to Prep Hoops. The 6-3 guard showed why with his ability to take guys off the dribble and hit shots from beyond the arc. He’s patient enough to react to the defense and create driving lanes with the dribble. His 6 first half trips to the free throw line bolster his ability to draw contact at the rim. He’s a good athlete. Its obvious on the break and around the rim. Though he’s listed as a point guard for his high school team he was in bucket mode in this game. His playmaking ability was present when a slick pass in the half court that turned into an assist.
Benjamin Price – Price was a mismatch nightmare for the bigs who covered him. He’s a fairly athletic 6-3 forward that can get downhill from the perimeter and finish at the rim. He had several full court drives that showed how good he is in space. Half of his production came in transition, the other in isolation on the wing.
