Several ranked prospects, three-point specialists, big men, high scoring guards, you name it this showcase had it, every type of recruit was there, many of them college-ready. Here we’ll take a look at a few 16U standouts whose stocks are on the rise after their sensational weekend.
Jake Fiegen | Height: 6’3 | Full Package 2023 | Winnetka, IL
34th ranked Illinois prospect, Jake Fiegen, proved to be the most deadly jump shooter in the entire building. A true shooting specialist that knocked down shots from all around the arc and was unbelievably hot in the corners, particularly on the left side of the floor where he showed a knack for getting open the most. Fiegen waited for the defense to fall asleep then he immediately got to his spots for the three, displaying an outstanding ability to quickly set his feet and get his shot off before the defense had the chance to contest. This sniper was on fire all weekend long and there was nothing anyone could do about it. Jake Fiegen put on the most impressive shooting performances of the event. In three consecutive games, he went for 28 points on 7 three-pointers, 27 points with 8 three-pointers, and 26 points on 6 three-pointers which all came in the first half, 3 of the 6 coming in the first 5 minutes of play from the exact same spot.
Evan Barber | Height: 6’1 | Rogue 2023 | Oklahoma City, OK
Lefty, Evan Barber started the game playing off the ball and firing from three-point range, marking his spots, setting the tone and the pace for the offense early on. Barber proved to be a sharpshooter that could knock down shots off the catch, coming off a screen, or off the dribble and get the same results. As Barber carried the scoring load he showed just how elite of a bucket getter he really is. A true master at creating his own shot, this guard could not be contained by just one man, not only does he have a mean package of handles, but he also has 101 ways of getting to his spots and getting inside the lane where he consistently converted tough shots through fouls and over big rim protectors. Evan Barber may be currently ranked at the 24th spot in the state of Oklahoma, but I think it’s safe to say that his stock is on the rise.
Jacob Martin | Height: 6’0 | SAL Elite 2023 | Omaha, NE
6th ranked Point Guard in the state of Nebraska, Jacob Martin came into the game off of the bench and gave his team a huge burst of energy, confidence, and much-needed scoring. Martin attacked the basket from the top of the key at a high rate, wiggling his way through the teeth of the defense before completing the play with one of his many spectacular finishes. Jacob Martin scored through contact with ease, making some of the most difficult shots I witnessed all weekend. One of the best aspects of Martin’s game was his high-level footwork off the bounce, whether he was pushing the ball in transition or driving to the hoop in the half-court set, he had savvy ways of using his euro steps, hop steps, and smooth step through moves to get around defenders. Jacob Martin went off and led the team in scoring with 12 points all off of the bench.
Luke Carter | Height: 5’10 | Dallas Premiere | Wylie, TX
This Texas native guard just gets better and better with time. Luke Carter looked unstoppable with the ball on the move, he was able to penetrate the lane and get to his spots whenever he pleased. Super slippery in one-on-one situations, he keeps a low dribble and looks to attack the hips of his defender with his explosive first step, forcing them to turn around, giving Carter the opportunity to shield the opponent off with his body to protect to the ball before going up with it. Fancy finisher at the hoop, this kid was able to complete a crafty layup through multiple defenders with ease. It didn’t matter if he attacked with his right or left hand, the play always ended with a layup or a foul call. At the Prep Hoops Exclusive event this past weekend he displayed another dimension to his game with his passing ability. His court vision was on another level, once Carter sucked the defense in he dropped dimes to his slashers cutting to the hoop, even if they weren’t fully free yet Carter was accurate enough to throw his teammates open. After such a spectacular showcasing, Luke Carter is starting to look a bit underrated at the 116th spot in the Texas player rankings.
Jalan Washington | Height: 6’2 | Showtime Elite LA 2023 | White Castle, LA
Top-100 Louisana recruit, Jalan Washington, is usually the floor general setting up the offense and getting everyone involved, but on this weekend Washington played more off the ball, giving him the opportunity to show off his scoring prowess. He played well off the ball and displayed the ability to score within the offense and take smart shots. The Showtime Elite guard was a phenomenal open-court athlete who did a great job of leaking out and completing the possession at the basket, off-balance, and off either foot. Washington was always able to get the shot he was looking for in two or three dribbles by reacting to the defender’s body movements and attacking angles in a blink of an eye, using his tight handles, very precise crossovers, and good footwork. Defensively, Jalan Washington was just as effective, especially in the passing lanes where he displayed great anticipation, a knack for jumping passes, deflecting throws, and causing turnovers in a game-changing manner.
