Here is a look at some of the Class of 2022 guards/wings that caught my eye during the weekend. Some names are known while others are putting in work under the radar.
Josh Barlow Josh Barlow 6'3" | SG Hollister | 2022 State MO 6’4″ All-Missouri Attack 17U: The talented shooting guard from Hollister erupted for 30 points in a game I watched on Sunday morning at the Midwest Live in Iowa. He has good size and he showcased a three-level scoring skill set that was pretty smooth. He’s a capable 3-point shooter who displayed a little shake-n-bake to his game when it came to creating his own shot. He has a nice spin dribble and can set up defenders well to get into the lane for his pull up jumper.
Larry Abbey Larry Abbey 5'9" | PG University City | 2022 State MO 5’10″ Arsenal Hoops 17U: The thick-bodied point guard from University City had an excellent weekend in helping lead his Arsenal Hoops team to a 6-0 record at the Elite 32 in Atlanta. He has flashy handles and passing skills, but he was also solid with the basketball as he ran the offense and kept everyone involved. He was also a capable scorer when his team needed it as he could wheel and deal in the lane or use his physical strength to get to wherever he needed to go.
Ethan Whatley Ethan Whatley 6'2" | SG Parkview | 2022 State MO 6’2″ MoKan 2022: A solid shooting guard who led his team to a perfect record at the Midwest Live in Iowa. He is physically strong and he relentlessly attacked the basket and did an excellent job of finishing through contact. He was always in constant motion without the ball as well as he scored on backcourts and in transition as well. He’s a very resourceful scorer in the 15 feet area, but he can also knock down perimeter jumpers.
Rob Martin Rob Martin 5'9" | PG CBC | 2022 State MO 5’9″ MoKan 17U EYBl: The standout point guard from CBC made his debut with MoKan over the weekend at the Midwest Live and looked very comfortable at both ends of the floor. He displayed his blazing speed and quickness in the open court while also applying excellent on-ball defensive pressure. His stop and pop pull up jumper from 15 feet is a weapon and he can penetrate into the lane as well. With five-star Kentucky commit Skyy Clark out of the lineup with a knee injury for the rest of the summer, Martin now becomes a more valuable piece for the upcoming Nike EYBL and Peach Jam event.
Andrew Dalton Andrew Dalton 6'3" | SG Ava | 2022 State MO 6’3″ DC Kings Missouri 2022: A stout lefty wing player who was a bucket throughout the weekend at the Prep Hoops, The Platform in Birmingham. Andrew has been playing baseball this summer, so this was his first grassroots action of the season and he made it count as he averaged more than 20 points a game. He’s thick and he’s skilled and he uses his body well around the basket and also to keep defenders away from him on his drives.
Tevin Gowins Tevin Gowins 5'9" | PG Hazelwood Central | 2022 State MO 5’9″ SW IL Jets – BK: The talented point guard from Hazelwood Central is the consummate floor leader. He’s an old school point guard who plays the pass first role as he looks to serve others and keep everyone involved. But when he becomes assertive, he is fully capable of getting buckets with his speed and ability to get into the lane. He will also hit the open 3-pointer while setting the pace for his team’s defense with his tenacious ball-hawking.
