Here are a handful of up-and-coming guards in KC to watch develop this summer (in alphabetical order):
David Cobin, 5-foot-8 guard, 2024, DeSoto:
Cobin has been a real headliner this summer for the KC Spurs. He has impressed at numerous tournaments and looks to be one of the top guards in the rising sophomore class. He got a little exposure to the varsity on a really good DeSoto team last year. Now he should be ready take on some responsibility. He’s a guy who can score at every level, including from really deep. He creates offense at the defensive end too.
Maddox Dow, 5-foot-8 guard, 2024, DeSoto:
Dow is a tough guard who can get into the lane and make things happen in traffic. He plays with aggressiveness at the defensive end and produces steals with quick hands and anticipation. Dow may team with Cobin to make for a tough backcourt at DeSoto.
Ryan Horsch, 5-foot-11 guard, Olathe East:
Horsch is a versatile guard who has good size for a variety of roles. He can score from the perimeter, but is also good at getting into the lane and feeding teammates. When he gets going downhill, he can make nice finishes in transition.
Josiah Polynice, 6-foot guard, 2024, Olathe South:
Like Cobin, Polynice has been a head-turner in games for the KC Spurs. He looks like he’s ready to challenge for playing time at the varsity level. He plays a physical style at the point, handling the ball against pressure, limiting mistakes and creating shots for himself. He gets in the lane and scores or draws fouls. His size and physicality makes him a tough customer on the defensive end too.
Amarian Womack, 5-foot-10 guard, 2024, KC-Washington:
The top offensive threat for the KC Runnin’ Rebels most of the time, Womack is always on the attack. He is regularly found pushing the ball full court, busting through defenses and creating his own shot. He has a variety of moves with the ball to get to open shots, which he can hit with acrobatic style. Womack is an intense competitor who might be ready for some varsity action this fall.
Labron Young, 5-foot-5 guard, 2024, KC-Washington:
If you think Womack is intense, watch Young. He doesn’t know the word ‘quit,’ and attacks relentlessly on the drive. Running with the Cauley-Stein Elite this summer, Young gets into the lane and fearlessly takes it right at defenses. Built low to the ground and powerful, Young can cause nightmares for opposing ball handlers. Young is a quick and creative ball handler who might be ready to provide some minutes for the KC-Washington varsity.
