Familiar Faces
Jeremiah Drake Jeremiah Drake 6'6" | PF Godwin Heights | 2022 State MI 6-4 2022 McBain Northern Michigan Christian (pictured at top of article) Coming off an absolutely huge start to the AAU season this multifaceted forward asserted himself well throughout the entire camp. Put simply in terms of overall skill set there aren’t many weaknesses. All players can get a little quicker to reach next level but that’s about it. Has plenty of strength. If he gets a guy on his hip in the post it’s a bucket. If he gets any room in the mid range it’s a bucket. If he… I think you get the point by now he’s a bucket all over the court. Good ball handler with next level court vision. If you run a guy at him he’ll find the open man. Could speed up the release a bit, but doesn’t appear to need much space right now. Will lead what should be one the top Division 4 teams in state.
Carmelo Lindsey 5-9 2023 Baldwin Winkle’s opponent in this past years Division 4 district final. Lindsey was the quickest player in the camp. Seemed to figure out where his spots were in the Thursday scrimmages. Not very big but uses his dribble to create space on the perimeter. Also has an effective euro step that allows him to get his shot off at the rim around larger defenders. Is aggressive in the post area for his size and has some triple doubles on his resume. Consistency on his outside shot will make him difficult to defend. After receiving some AAU run with The Program could be in line for a big junior season.
Levi McKenzie 5-10 2023 Forest Hills Central I really enjoyed this smaller guard’s game early in the Spring AAU season. Nice to run into him again playing a long way from home. Compact and powerfully built guard penetrated well all camp. Showed toughness by playing through an ankle injury. Will need to become a little more consistent with his outside shot but the handle and quickness are already there. Will continue to run with a guard heavy B3 2023 squad for AAU. In the regular season plays for former Grand Valley guard Kyle Carhart (Grand Valley). The Ranger program has pretty good assembly line of point guards going. McKenzie is on his way to becoming the next one.
New Names
Leo Kent Leo Kent 6'4" | SG Rochester Stoney Creek | 2023 State MI 6-4 2023 Flushing Like McKenzie playing a long way from home and appeared to take a day or two to get comfortable. Good size for a wing with long arms. Excelled in the drill portion of the camp and has readily apparent fundamental skills. Good athlete who defended hard in scrimmages. Will need to add some weight and strength moving forward but has a lot to work with already.
Alex Calcaterra 6-3 2023 Boyne City Had an absolutely huge day in the scrimmages. He’s a wing all the way but when he got it in the paint has the strength to get his shot off in a variety of ways. This is due to his powerful frame and the ability to finish creatively with both hands. Especially the left. Also helps that he is explosive leaper off of two feet. Competitor who played like he had something to prove. Comes from a family of college athletes and could be next if he continues to play like he did Thursday afternoon.
