With AAU basketball in full swing this month a number of key guys will be missing but teams are still playing and giving some of their younger players an opportunity for experience.
We had the opportunity to drop by a few games this first week including the Tigard Tournament, of which the varsity and junior varsity brackets were captured by Beaverton. Here are some of the new faces that caught our eye.
Sorena Torabi (2022 Lake Oswego)
Torabi played varsity this past year at Lake Oswego and even started some games early. He is a blue collar hard worker that gets the most out of his size and strength at 6-foot-3. He consistently crashed the boards on both ends in all three Lake Oswego games but also stepped outside and knocked down some open threes.
Luke Brauner (2022 Lake Oswego)
Brauner got some bit action on varsity this year but given what we’ve seen, the lefty will get plenty of burn this next season. He was active on both ends of the floor, attacking the hoop while also showing off a fairly smooth jumper. He’s a two-sport athlete as he excels on the diamond as a pitcher.
Mason Shank (2023 Beaverton)
Shank was Beaverton’s JV MVP and he showed some nice offensive ability in the Tigard Tournament. The lanky guard showed that he could hit open threes but also put the ball on the floor and either hit pull-up jumpers or take it all the way to the hoop.
Jacob Scacco (2022 La Salle)
With the graduation of Nic Boyd Nic Boyd 6'0" | PG La Salle Prep | 2021 State OR and Jake Owens Jake Owens 6'0" | CG La Salle | 2021 State OR there will be shots available and Scacco may be the one inheriting many of them. The lead guard was very aggressive offensively for the Falcons in the Tigard Tournament, whether it was hitting from long range or getting to the basket. He showed a good motor on defense as well.
Peyton Reyes (2025 Southridge)
We were really impressed with the energy the incoming Southridge freshman brought to the game whenever he was on the court. He may be a smallish guard but he was all over the place on defense and late in the Skyhawks’ semifinal win, was fighting for offensive rebounds left and right to keep the ball alive.
