There was a good number of coaches in the gym along with Prep Hoops evaluating NorCal. Here’s our list of 2023 prospects who caught our attention with their play. PH was only at the main gym.
BJ Davis BJ Davis 6'2" | CG Modesto Christian | 2023 State #182 Nation CA-N 6’1 PG of Lakeshow 16’s Elite (Modesto Christian HS) 2023
The word has been out for a while now. Davis is one of the fast rising prospects in NorCal or all of California in the C/O 2023. He has the tools, and ability to effect the game at both guard spots at this level. He got buckets in the usual fashion. He can score in a variety of ways, including big buckets in the clutch, he plays good defense. The thing that stands out with Davis is he seems to makes his teammates better. He’s one to watch.
Jalen Brown Jalen Brown 6'2" | SG Modesto Christian | 2023 State CA-N 6’3 G of Lakeshow 16’s Elite (Everett Alvarez HS) 2023
The versatile, and athletic Brown is a name to know. He has a good frame to build up, he’ll add an inch or two maybe, which will raise his game to another level. He has a good set of skills right now. He has good flow, and movement on the court. His ability to create his own shot off the dribble, finish around the basket including floaters, and dunks stood out. He has a good catch and shoot shot from the corner. He can guard multiple positions. A good rebounding guard.
Jake Olson Jake Olson 6'4" | SG Oak Ridge | 2023 State CA-N 6’4 SG of Rose City Ballers 16U (Oak Ridge HS) 2023
Olsen showed us a good all-around skill set. He was one of the better players in the 2023 class at this event. He was a consistent scorer throughout this event. The game we saw he took over, scoring tough buckets with spins moves on the drive, pushing it hard, knocking down key buckets down the stretch. He wanted the ball! We’ll see more of him.
Amos Hodgson Amos Hodgson 6'2" | SG Bishop O'Dowd | 2023 State CA-N 6’2 SG of WCE NorCal 16 – Edwards (Bishop O’Dowd HS) 2023
Hodgson IV was a scoring machine, there’s a good chance he led this age group in scoring for this event. He scored in all the ways a player can score in a game. It was his role for this team, not a lot of forced shots, in the flow buckets, creating his own off the dribble, filling lanes and finishing with good body control. He had strong drives through contact for and one’s at the free throw line. Throw in a consistent mid-range, plus he took a beating.
Jake King Jake King 6'5" | SF Clayton Valley Charter | 2023 State CA-N 6’5 W/F of Prime 16U (De La Salle HS) 2023
King has an improving skill set for a player with his bulk and size, he gets up and down the court at a good pace, sometimes first. He has good fundamentals, on both ends of the court. He’s one of the few you could hear talking on defense. He’s most effective in and around the post area right now boxing out, and corralling rebounds. He’ll keep shooting that 3 in the corner if he’s open, he’ll hit it. He plays hard and is aggressive.
Teshawn Gamble Teshawn Gamble 5'11" | PG Oakland | 2023 State CA-N 5’11 PG of Arsenal 16U National (Oakland HS)
Gamble is a quality PG with superb handles, and confidence needed for the position. He has good quickness to go by defenders on his way to a mid-range jumper, or into the paint to collapse the defense on the drive. A good passer with vision. His quick hands, and feet on defense disrupts the flow, and generates turnovers.
