Whether it’s that they aren’t physically up to the size and speed of the action, or that their skills are not fully developed, most ninth graders just aren’t able to beat out the older guys for playing time.
Of course there is the rare exception, like T.J. Williams, already an all-state honorable mention performer at Wichita Heights. Williams was a team leader for the Falcons, pitching in 8.3 points and 3.0 boards.
But there are occasionally other ninth graders who are pressed into duty for a depleted team, or who are physically up to the task and are ready to be challenged.
Here are a few 2024 bigs who were contributors to their varsity teams last year (alphabetical order):
Jeron Askren Jeron Askren 6'3" | SG Maize South | 2024 State KS , 6-foot-4 forward, 2024, Maize South (pictured):
A deep and veteran Maize South squad called upon the long ninth grader to help out, and he responded. Askren contributed 5.5 points and 2.8 rebounds in a supporting role. He showed some ability from deep, and busted loose for 20 against Dodge City. The team returns a lot from last season and Askren will help it take the next step.
Andrell Burton, 6-foot-4 forward, 2024, Campus:
It’s not easy for a ninth grader to get on the floor for one of the most talented teams in the state, but Burton did it. He was an important piece for the Colts, who came up just short of the 6A state title. Burton supported the senior stars with 5.9 points and 2.9 boards a game. He was rarely spectacular as a rookie, but he played a steady role. Watch for this guy to take off next year.
B.J. Canady, 6-foot-5 center, 2024, Topeka High:
Canady had his plate full as a ninth grader, starting at quarterback for the powerhouse Trojans, and manning the middle for the basketball team. He started most of the Trojans’ games in a rebuilding year, and showed a high ceiling. He’s huge and powerful and just needs to develop. He had highlights of 13 points against Topeka West and 12 against Emporia.
Asa Tarver, 6-foot-3 forward, 2024, Wichita South:
The long wing came on midseason for the Titans. He had several games in double figures, highlighted by a 19-point outburst against Wichita Heights. He shot a nice 38% from deep and averaged 4.9 points per game. He added 1.4 rebounds for the Titans.
