The two-day event took place from Saturday, July 3rd through Sunday, July 4th. The event featured over 40 teams ranging from 15U to 17U. It also featured several talented wings prospects. In this article, we take a look at the top Wings from the event.
Donovan Black Donovan Black 6'6" | PF Del Valle | 2023 State TX 6’6 SF New Mexico D1 2023 (featured image) – The argument will be, is he a wing or a post? For my money, Black is at his best when playing on the perimeter. He has big-time on-ball defensive ability. D1 played zone most of the event, however on the occasions that they played man, Black showed that he can guard primary ballhandlers with the best of them. Offensively his ability to rebound, and lead the break is valuable, and he showed good hands and a soft touch around the rim when finishing.
Parker Gerrits Parker Gerrits 6'1" | PG Olympia | 2023 State WA 6’1 SG Roots Academy 2023 – Gerrits is a straight up assassin. I was sitting next to an opposing teams bench when the ball hit the sniper’s hand, wide open in the corner. Almost in unison, everyone on the bench let out a loud sigh, seemingly acknowledging that you could all but count the basket. As expected he knocked it down. Gerrit showed a knack for making big shots and proved he can score in multiple ways. He was one of the top overall weapons on the weekend.
Mazen Bissat 6’1 SF Coastal Elite 2024 – Bissat is going to get a lot of attention for his scoring, but I thought he also contributed on the defensive end as well. He competed hard, blocked shots, and protected the rim a bit. His scoring was legit though as he was able to knock down open 3’s and finish in transition.
Cooper Carlson 6’3 West Academy 2024 – Carlson seemed as if he was on an escalator and everyone else was taking the stairs. He glides to the lane, making it look effortless. The lefty was also able to space the floor with his shooting and showed good enough passing ability to hit teammates with on time and on target dimes. He had a monster performance in the full game I saw, finishing with 26 points.
Vaughn Weems 6’2 SF Fuego 2023 – Weems is a natural scorer that can get buckets multiple ways. The lefty scored off dribble drives and in transition, but he also had a knack for coming up with offensive putback. He had a big 23 point performance in the game I saw.
