Continue ReadingThe St. John Bosco Summer Classic was one of the final high school-based tournaments to run this summer. The field was a strong collection of 16 SoCal-based teams with a good amount of college prospects on each roster. In this piece we take a closer look at the standouts from the rising junior class who were not mentioned in our initial coverage of this event.
JJ Gray JJ Gray 6'7" | PG Fountain Valley | 2023 State CA-S , Fountain Valley – Gray is a long, wiry off-guard with a smooth shooting stroke. The 6-foot-5 rising junior is a knockdown shooter off the catch when given time and space and showed improved ball skills when creating for himself and teammates off the bounce. Gray is a high IQ basketball player who doesn’t force bad shots and is always looking to find an open cutter or to make the extra pass to a shooter.
Jurian Dixon Jurian Dixon 6'4" | SG St. Augustine | 2023 State #247 Nation CA-S , St. Augustine – Dixon is a strong, physical wing with dynamic and explosive athleticism in the open court. The 6-foot-4 wing excels in transition settings where he can slash his way to the rim for paint finishes either above the rim or through contact. Dixon is an instinctual defender whose frame and lateral speed allow him to guard multiple positions. The highly-touted junior out of San Diego showed some isolation break down ability and mid-post game on offense, as well.
Vincent Ricchiuti, St. Augustine – Ricchiuti is a nice floor-spreading piece for the Saints and pairs well alongside their bevy of guards who are great at getting two feet in the paint. The 6-foot-5 wing has fundamental shooting mechanics, great shot preparation, and a high finish on his follow through which are all qualities taht make him a guy who is tough to close out on.
Amire Jones Amire Jones 6'2" | PG Leuzinger | 2023 State CA-S , Leuzinger – Jones is a talented combo guard whose ability to impact the offensive side of the floor both on and off the ball stood out. The son of Leuzinger High coach Arturo Jones has a long and wiry frame with smooth athleticism and ball skills. Jones is a capable catch-and-shooter from three-point range, but can also break down his defender in isolation and get space for a pull-up jumper and he has a knack for scoring in transition.
Macarhy Morris Macarhy Morris 6'1" | PG Lakewood | 2023 State CA-S , Fountain Valley – Morris has been a complimentary piece at Fountain Valley through his first two seasons, coming off the bench to provide the Barons with a spark on offense and defense. But with a couple key senior departures off the roster, look for the 6-foot guard to shoulder some more responsibility as a junior. Morris has good passing feel and speed with the ball in his hands. Morris is best when attacking the rim and finishing or dishing to a teammate in the half-court setting.
