Here are a few guards from big schools who have turned heads this summer (in alphabetical order):
Jameer Clemons Jameer Clemons 5'10" | CG Derby | 2022 State KS , 5-foot-10 guard, 2022, Midwest Magic, Derby HS:
Clemons has looked this summer like one of the top players who didn’t play a lot of varsity last year. With Derby so loaded with guards, playing time is tough to get. But Clemons has shown some brilliance in a lot of areas this summer. He handles the ball and distributes it to shooters, often off high-speed and creative maneuvers. He has hit from the perimeter. And his defense against opposing guards has been really good.
Mason Gomez Mason Gomez 6'3" | SG Topeka | 2023 KS , 6-foot-2 forward, 2023, Kansas 94×50 Elite, Topeka West HS (pictured):
Similar to Clemons’ situation at Derby, playing time at Topeka West is tough to get. To this point, Gomez has been a JV player, but this summer he has really jumped out for his 3-point shooting. He has consistently knocked down catch-and-shoot opportunities, and he has shown the ability to dribble into an open shot, and to move to open areas. Gomez is solidly built and can do other things besides shoot, but that’s where he’s standing out.
Joby Love, 6-foot-1 guard, 2022, Kansas Players, Maize South HS:
Love may have turned in some of the best defensive work of all Kansans on the summer circuit. He overwhelms opponents with his quickness and long limbs, and he loves to intimidate. He’s gotten in the heads of plenty of ball handlers this summer. On offense, Love is a quick ball handler who penetrates using his agility and quick crossover.
Jack Ryan, 6-foot-1 guard, 2022, Showtime, Lawrence HS:
Ryan was a key contributor to last year’s great Lawrence High team. Now he’s prepping this summer to take on a much bigger role. He can shoot from anywhere and has an effective pull-up jumper on the drive. Ryan is a long and athletic guard who makes solid plays and good decisions.
Dylan Sanchez, 5-foot-5 guard, 2024, KS 94×50 Elite, Shawnee Heights:
A small guard who has really shown a lot this summer, Sanchez might just press for some time for the T-Birds this fall. He’s demonstrated the ability to handle the ball and penetrate to create shots. He’s shown he can score off the drive. And at times he’s really lit it up from the perimeter. He’s clever and aggressive on defensive.
