Battlezone LA: 2022 Standouts, Part 2
Malachi Murrell Malachi Murrell 6'2" | SF Shadow Hills | 2022 CA-S , 6-5 2022 W, La Quinta/ Gamepoint Elite
Murrell’s defense on Cord Stansberry Cord Stansberry 6'3" | SG Shadow Hills | 2022 State CA-S in Gamepoint’s win over Los Angeles Elite was impressive. He worked hard to deny him spots on the floor, forced him to his non-dominant hand and challenged every shot with a high hand. Offensively, the slasher had a couple of nice finishes in traffic and had a big transition dunk that keyed a Gamepoint run. At 17 years old, there are few wings with his upside and length in the class.
Loren Daniel, 6-2 2022 G, Balboa School/ West Coast Flight
Daniel is a gritty, on-ball defender who is a nightmare for opposing guards. He sits in a stance, slides his feet and bullies guards off their path. Offensively, the combo guard is a solid spot up shooter who can score from mid-range with a nice one-dribble pull-up. A very improved prospect.
Alexis Marmolejos Alexis Marmolejos 6'1" | PG Army Navy | 2022 State CA-S , 6-2 2022 G, Army Navy/ San Diego All-Stars
Explosive is the word to describe Marmolejos, a speedy combo guard who plays with an edge. He can finish at the basket through contact (with either hand), and his burst and first step are elite. Marmolejos also showed off his passing chops with a few dimes in transition. Defensively, he’s playing a lot more consistently and his effort level on that end has ratcheted up. He’s an underrated guard prospect in the class.
Dylan Godfrey, 6-8 2022 F, Pacifica Christian/ Los Angeles Elite 17u
Godfrey is one of the better pick-and-pop bigs in the gym, as his floor spacing ability translates to the next level, where bigs that can shoot are all the rage. He isn’t limited to just spot-up shooting, as Godfrey showed he can hit a one-dribble pull-up from midrange. The area of the game where he has to grow is on defense and the boards, where he at times shies from contact.
Markees Williams Markees Williams 6'0" | PG Helix | 2022 State CA-S , 6-1 2022 G, Helix/ California Select 17u
Very few guards have Williams blend of athleticism, pace and feel, and he showed it in flashes throughout the weekend. He is a very good passer, though at times he forces passes when he should look to score. Defensively, he uses his length and lateral quickness advantageously. Very underrated prospect.
Vishal Jayanthi, 6-4.5 2022 SG, Sage Creek/ West Coast Flight
Jayanthi was one of the top shooters in the gym, and is dead-eye once his feet are set. He also showed the improved ability to attack closeouts with his dominant and hand finish through contact. He has to work on improving his handle against pressure, especially with his left. With freakish length and very potent athleticism, Jayanthi is one of So Cal’s top sleepers.
Rami Anglo Rami Anglo 6'1" | SG Mission Bay | 2022 State CA-S , 6-3 2022 SG, Mission Bay/ San Diego All-Stars
Always one of San Diego’s top perimeter defenders, Anglo continues to evolve offensively. He moves well without the ball, cutting sharply to open spots and finishing off assists from his talented back court teammates. He also remains shot ready and knocks down corner threes off of guard penetration. His handle has improved in the open floor, and he can finish above the rim on the break.
Dean Lahanas, 6-2 2022 SG, Cathedral Catholic/ Gamepoint Select
The lefty Lahanas knocked down seven threes in Gamepoint Select’s upset win over Team Keenan Allen. He moves well without the ball to his spots on the floor, and has a very quick release. In other games during the weekend, Lahanas did a good job attacking closeouts and showing off nice touch on floaters off of one dribble in space.
