Among some of the top performing teams included Bates Fundamentals and M&M Boyz, with the latter being one of the top 17U programs on the Prep Hoops Circuit so far this Spring. 5 specific players impressed me throughout the weekend and are highlighted in this piece today.
Kareem Aburashed- M&M Boyz (Detroit Country Day) 6-9 (2022)
Aburashed looked to me like the most polished collegiate prospect on this list. Very skilled low post man. Great arsenal of post moves which starts with with great body control, court awareness, and footwork. Consistently scored with his back to the basket. Struggled on the defensive end especially defending the perimeter but still worked hard. Overall though, D2 programs likely were impressed with what they saw out of Aburashed and should keep him on their radars.
Stephen Coleman Stephen Coleman 6'4" | SG Elevation Prep | 2022 IN – Bates Fundamentals Red (Hillcrest Prep) 6-5 (2022)
Technically Coleman would be an Arizona prospect, but he spent last weekend with the Michigan players so we will include in this piece. Coleman came off the bench but made an impact as soon as he stepped foot on the floor. Shifty around the rim. Good overall offesnive game. Sometimes made the play too complicated but you have to like his size at 6-5. He’s received interest from D1 and D2s since last year.
Logan Brooks Logan Brooks 6'7" | SF Muskegon Reeths-Puffer | 2022 State MI – Grand Rapids Storm-Wood (Reeths Puffer) 6-7 (2022)
Brooks is a high hustle and high energy player. Something you don’t see a lot out of guys his size. Lots of bounce in his game especially as a rebounding threat. Excelled against an athletic Hard Work Basketball team. Possessed the basketball well and found success beating guys off the bounce and finishing around the rim. Showed he can excel around other athletic personnel and can be a great role guy.
Juwan Maxey Juwan Maxey 6'3" | CG Detroit Renaissance | 2022 State MI – Bates Fundamentals Red (Renaissance) 6-1 (2022)
Maxey was a solid defensive player and did a solid job of turning defense into offense. Jumped passing lanes and disrupted ball handlers with his speed. Great patience on the offensive end. Excelled in pick-and-roll and checked the roll man before forcing shots. High upside guard.
Gabriel Newhoff- Grand Rapids Storm-Wood (Unity Christian) 6-8 (2022)
Smart post player that understands how to use his size to his advantage. Gets a hand on rebounds with his motor and arm length. Good post ups with good footwork. Gets his shoulders squared to the rim and muscles through contact. Has to work on his hands and securing post entry passes, but regardless a quality prospect I think D3+ programs should keep an eye on.
