I made the trip to Birmingham, AL where there were a number of events I attended including the Adidas 3SSB Session One and the Prep Hoops Circuit “The Platform.”
With so many talented players in one area for coaches to see, it will be tons of content coming out with standouts from both events.
Here’s a look at part three of the 2022 prospects that stood out to me at the 3SSB Birmingham stop, looking at guys from Texas and Minnesota.
Keyonte George Keyonte George 6'5" | SG IMG Academy | 2022 State #4 Nation FL | 6’4” WG | Southern Assault
George showed why he’s considered one of if not the best pure scorer in the country, and he also showed he can do more when he isn’t shooting the ball particularly well too. Throughout the event he was scoring in a number of ways both on and off the bounce showing his deep range and ability to create space at will, but in their highly anticipated matchup against WACG his shot wasn’t falling early but he settled in and continued to play hard and finished with 24 points and 18 rebounds in the win. He’s one of those rare guys that I feel OK putting in print that you’ll likely see him in the Association here soon.
Austin Nunez Austin Nunez 6'2" | PG San Antonio Wagner | 2022 State #97 Nation TX | 6’1” PG | Southern Assault
Nunez is my type of point guard as he’s very aware that he plays with one of the top scorers in the country and doesn’t try to take over despite the fact that he can score with the best of them as well, and instead he runs the show and picks his spots to efficiently score it. He’s a smooth lefty that changes speeds well, gets to spots easily off the bounce and can make shots from both the midrange and from deep consistently. He’s a tone setter on both ends and while he doesn’t seem super explosive he’s a surprisingly good athlete.
Quion Williams Quion Williams 6'4" | SF Mansfield Legacy | 2022 State #107 Nation TX | 6’4” WF | Southern Assault
Williams is the x-factor for this Southern Assault team as there are players that are maybe more talented but his mix of athleticism and high motor makes him super productive and is why high major coaches are starting to flock to him. He’s a menace in transition as he has good end-to-end speed and can finish way above the rim, he rebounds well for his positions and he’s a good defender who gives great effort both on and off the basketball. He still has tons of room to continue to develop and is far from playing his best basketball.
Bajeda Omot | 6’7” PF | D1 Minnesota
Omot plays on a D1 MN team that has two Big 10 commits and a couple others being recruited at that level, but he still finds ways to be productive and make a position impact on both ends. He plays hard every time he’s on the floor even when he isn’t getting shots, he’s surprisingly skilled off the bounce and crafty around the rim and he has a knack for being around the basketball at all times. He holds a handful of offers now but I expect that list to grow as he’s one of those players that understands his game and can fit into multiple systems too.
Tamin Lipsey | 6’2” PG | D1 Minnesota
Now onto those Big 10 commits I talked about earlier for D1MN, and Lipsey is the first one who is committed to Iowa State. He supposedly suffered a bad leg injury and he hasn’t been in action for too long before this weekend, but you couldn’t tell by watching him play as he was smooth, physical and very productive too. He’s strong off the bounce and a big time finisher through traffic, he can drill it from deep with consistency and he’s a great help side defender who is always there in rotations.
Camden Heide Camden Heide 6'7" | SF Wasatch Academy | 2022 State #129 Nation UT | 6’7” WF | D1 Minnesota
The other Big 10 commit, this one heading to Purdue, Heide seems like he’ll be a perfect fit for the Boilermakers with his mix of size, skill set and explosion around the rim. He plays very hard for someone who’s as talented as he is, and he brings it on both ends of the floor and plays with great energy every time I saw him out there. He can knock down shots from deep and in the midrange, he moves well off the basketball and he’s fearless when he gets downhill and will punish you around the rim.
