There were multiple big scoring performances and lots of games coming down to the wire. Here’s part two of who impressed me on day one:
Maddox Mecklenburg Maddox Mecklenburg 6'3" | CG Kingfisher | 2023 State OK Kingfisher: Mecklenburg has transformed himself into one of the top 2023 wing prospects in the state. He has a very solid case for best shooter in his class. This summer, he’s shooting nearly 45% from deep. He’s added pull-ups and step backs into his game, as well as improving his ability to drive. Mecklenburg had a huge 21 point outing today where he knocked down 4 triples. He continues to raise his stock.
Jordan McGowan Buddy Buckets: McGowan made a name for himself during the state tournament and has built on it this summer. He’s a true do-it-all guard who is always looking to make the winning play. He has one of the smoothest crossovers into a jumper that I’ve seen. He has nice elevation on his midrange jump shot and is a fantastic three point shooter. McGowan has a quick first step and gets to the rim with ease. Will be a major riser in this class.
Evan Gruis ProSkills ATX: Gruis is a great scorer and is creative with the ball in his hands. He’s strong on his drives to the bucket and finishes through contact. He had a massive and-one to tie the game late today. He had 15+ points in every game and went for 20 in the second. Gruis is a strong guard and he has a nice jumper too. He’s a great team player and knows how to finish well around the rim.
Jamouri Mccalister NextLevel: Mccalister is an elite defender on the perimeter. He’s always providing ball pressure and in the passing lanes. He has a very high motor and will dive on the floor for loose balls. He’s a solid offensive rebounder and just has a knack for the ball. Today he displayed his elite scoring ability, too, adding 18 points in NextLevel’s win. He had a nice tip-in shot and showed off his smooth midrange game. He’s also a willing passer and a winning player.
Matthew Tofpi Oklahoma Runners: Tofpi is a very athletic guard/wing prospect. He seems to be floating around on the court with his quickness and elite jumping abilities. Tofpi always seems to make the right play on the court. He made scoring look easy, too, as he had an impressive 22 point outing today. Tofpi is a solid shooter and does a great job at creating his own shot. He’s an ultra athlete who knows how to make an impact on the game.
