2023 SF Drew Kingery Drew Kingery 6'4" | SF Indianola | 2023 State IA (Indianola)
Kingery is one of the top players in the 2023 class, and he has risen so high in the rankings in large part due to his shooting and scoring prowess. He didn’t have his shot in the first half of the Indians win over Urbandale, so he took over as a playmaker, getting into the heart of the defense and kicking out to open shooters. He found his stroke a bit in the second half, scoring 13 second half points after a scoreless first 20 minutes, but the improved ball-handling and playmaking skills are what were most important in his performance here. He’s a long wing who uses his length effectively on defense as well, contesting shots and getting into passing lanes.
2023 SG Casey Glascock Casey Glascock 6'0" | PG Indianola | 2023 State IA (Indianola)
I don’t know if it’s the shooting sleeve, the hair, or the swagger that they both play with, but Glascock reminds me a lot of Ballard star wing Ashton Hermann Ashton Hermann 6'4" | SG Ballard | 2022 State IA . He’s a long, athletic wing who can be a menace in transition, getting end-to-end quickly and finishing creatively around the rim. He uses his length well on the defensive end, and has a knack for jumping passing lanes, and he has a nice looking stroke from behind the arc. He’s a confident player on both ends of the floor and a lot of fun to watch.
2024 PG Grant Uecker Grant Uecker 6'3" | PG Urbandale | 2024 State IA (Urbandale)
The sophomore-to-be delivered one of the best performances of the weekend in Urbandale’s loss to Indianola, knocking down seven 3-pointers, and a large majority of them barely moved the net. A knockdown shooter off the catch, he moves really well without the ball in his hands, finding spaces in the defense to get his shot off with a quick, smooth release. He’s a good ball-handler who can also get into the teeth of the defense and facilitate for his teammates. As he continues to grow and mature physically, he could turn into one of the better scorers in the 2024 class.
2024 SG Caleb Mattes (Newton)
The younger Mattes brother is a high IQ guard who is equally adept scoring or facilitating. He can fill it up from all three levels, showing a quick release off the catch and the ability to create his own shot. He gets the ball into the shooting quickly off the dribble, and does a good job utilizing screens off the ball to find space in the defense to get his shot. He can finish around the bucket with either hand and is a smart defensive player as well.
2022 SF Adam Witty Adam Witty 6'2" | SF Des Moines Christian | 2022 State IA (Des Moines Christian)
A physical wing who really embraces contact in the paint, Witty does a great job finishing through the contact around the rim. He’s a big bodied wing who does a majority of his damage inside the painted area, but he showed a decent looking stroke from behind the arc as well in the Lions win over East. He crashes the offensive glass hard and is constantly moving and cutting off the ball, trying to find spaces in the defense to get easy buckets. He also made some clutch free throws late to ice the game away. Witty finished with 19 points for the Lions.
2024 PF Tyron Wright Tyron Wright 6'6" | PF Roosevelt | 2024 State IA (Des Moines East)
Wright is an intriguing young big man who was a beast on the glass as a freshman in the tough CIML. He’s fairly limited offensively at this point, but he showed decent touch around the rim and a jumper out to around the free-throw line. He excels with his work on the glass on both ends of the floor, as he has good size and excellent hands. He’ll need to develop a left hand and some go-to post moves as he continues his progression, but there are a lot of raw tools here to work with.
