2023 SF Kyle Sternberg Kyle Sternberg 6'4" | SG AHSTW | 2023 State IA (AHSTW)
A skilled 6-4 wing, Sternberg is a key piece of a very talented 2023 class for the Vikings. He can really shoot it, showing a pretty stroke while knocking down four 3s in their loss to Aplington-Parkersburg. He has a good feel for the game and is a really good passer who sees the floor at a high level. He does a great job using his length to make an impact on the defensive end as well. He finished with 15 points.
2023 F Brayden Lund Brayden Lund 6'4" | SF AHSTW | 2023 State IA (AHSTW)
Another piece of that talented 2023 group for AHSTW, Lund is a versatile scorer who can get the job done inside and out. A 6-4 lefty with a nice perimeter stroke, he also has good footwork and touch around the rim. He has good hands, rebounds at a high level on both ends of the floor, and isn’t afraid to use his physicality on the defense end to battle for position in the paint.
2024 SG Gavin Thomas Gavin Thomas 6'1" | SG Aplington-Parkersburg | 2024 State IA (Aplington-Parkersburg)
Aplington-Parkersburg was playing without three of their top four players for various reasons ( Jayden Mackie Jayden Mackie 6'2" | PG Aplington-Parkersburg | 2022 State IA , Garrett Hempen Garrett Hempen 5'10" | PG Aplington-Parkersburg | 2023 State IA , Christian Haugstad Christian Haugstad 6'7" | C Aplington-Parkersburg | 2022 State IA ), but that didn’t matter to Thomas, who delivered 25 points in the Falcons win over a very good AHSTW team. Known for his shooting prowess, Thomas did an excellent job being aggressive and attacking the rim routinely. He made 12 free throws in the game. He also showcased his top-notch perimeter stroke, knocking down a three big 3s in the second half. Without Mackie and Hempen on the floor, he was able to showcase his improved ball-handling and playmaking abilities, and he used his length effectively on the defensive end.
2022 PG Kaleb Booth Kaleb Booth 6'1" | SG Carroll | 2022 State IA (Carroll)
A talented scoring guard, Booth did pretty much whatever he wanted to in the first half of the Tigers win over Valley, scoring 14 points in the first 20 minutes. He showed a little bit of everything in his arsenal, as he knocked down a pair of 3s off the catch, showed the ability to get to the rim for tough finishes, and using creative footwork to open up some space to get off a mid-range jumper. He’s a good passer, especially when he’s playing in the pick-and-roll, dropping pocket passes to open teammates, and he does a good job playing the passing lanes defensively and turning defense into offense. He scored a game-high 22 points.
2022 SG Nick Macke Nick Macke 5'10" | SG Carroll | 2022 State IA (Carroll)
If the first half was all about Booth, the second half was about Macke. His game is similar to Booth in that he can fill it up from all three levels. He’s a talented shooter both off the dribble and the catch, and he has a quick first step that he uses to blow by defenders. He had 11 points in the second half and finished with 17 in the game.
2025 CG Curtis Stinson Jr. (Valley)
The young son of former Iowa State star guard Curtis Stinson, Junior had a great game for Valley, scoring a team-high 14 points. He looks to be about 6-2 right now, and has a big, physical and athletic frame. He displayed a nice, smooth stroke from the arc, and he uses his physicality to get to the bucket where he finishes through contact. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of his game, however, was his positioning defensively. Many young players really struggle on that end of the floor, but Stinson knows where to be and has the length and athleticism to be an impact defender.
2022 PG Blake Janssen Blake Janssen 5'11" | CG Iowa Falls-Alden | 2022 State IA (Iowa Falls-Alden)
A 6-0 lead guard, Janssen is an excellent passer who thrives on getting others involved. He always has his head up and he does a great job getting into the teeth of the defense, making them collapse, and then finding pocket passes to open teammates for easy layups. He had a slew of assists for the Cadets in their win over Des Moines East, and then took over as a scorer in the second half, scoring 14 second half points, including a pair of big free throws late to ice the game away. He has a quick, smooth release off the catch and is willing to post up smaller defenders.
2023 PG Drew Schreurs (Centennial)
One of several young standouts for the Jaguars, Schreurs finished with 16 points, showing a smooth stroke from the arc and the ability to get to the rim in the halfcourt in finish through contact.
