2022 PF Kale Krogh Kale Krogh 6'6" | C Ballard | 2022 State IA (Ballard)
Krogh recently committed to play offensive line at Iowa, and it’s easy to see what Kirk Ferentz loves about this kid – he’s big, physical, agile, and has excellent hands. If he wasn’t such a good offensive line prospect, he could’ve been a solid Division II basketball player. He does a great job carving out post position, and has the strength to seal off anyone at this level. He has soft hands and pulls down anything that comes near him, and he has great touch around the rim. Where he really shines, however, is on the defensive end of the floor. He can defend the pick-and-roll effectively and is a great rim protector who rarely needs to leave his feet to block or contest shots, which helps keep him out of foul trouble. He played limited minutes as the Bombers are looking to get experience for a lot of new faces, but he’s primed to have a huge senior year on the hardwood as well as the gridiron.
2022 SG Ashton Hermann Ashton Hermann 6'4" | SG Ballard | 2022 State IA (Ballard)
With Connor Drew Connor Drew 6'6" | PF Ballard | 2021 State IA and Mason Murphy Mason Murphy 5'9" | PG Ballard | 2021 State IA graduated, the Bombers will absolutely be Hermann’s team this year, and he’s primed to have a huge senior season as a scorer. A lightning quick guard, he’s a terror in transition who gets end-to-end as quickly as anyone in the state. He struggled with his jumper at times in the Bombers’ win over Ankeny, but with his ability to break down the defense and get to the rim, he can still be an effective scorer even when the shot isn’t falling. He’s one of the best players I’ve seen during my time at Prep Hoops Iowa at playing the passing lanes and knowing when to jump them to turn defense into easy offense, right up there with Tyreke Locure.
2024 SF Lio Aguirre Lio Aguirre 6'3" | SF Ankeny | 2024 State IA (Ankeny)
Aguirre was a key piece for a good Centennial team last year as a freshman, and has transferred over to the other side of town for his sophomore year. A physical 6-2 wing who uses his size and physicality to his advantage, he can bully his way to the rim and finish through contact effectively. He’s a capable shooter, but is at his best when he’s playing downhill and getting to the bucket. He sees the floor well and is a good, willing passer. He had 13 points in the Hawks loss, with 9 of them coming during a late second half comeback.
2022 SF Adam Mattes Adam Mattes 6'3" | SG Newton | 2022 State IA (Newton)
Mattes had a bit of a quiet first half for the Cardinals in their win over ADM, but he came alive in a big way in the second half. A 6-4 wing who can score from all three levels, he plays under control and showed an improved handle and playmaking abilities. Like Aguirre, he saved his best for later in the game, scoring 11 of his team-high 13 points in the second half.
2022 PF Clark Fiala Clark Fiala 6'4" | C Van Meter | 2022 State IA (Van Meter)
The 6-6 big man had a strong game on both ends of the floor for the Bulldogs. He does a great job keeping the ball high when he catches it on the block or when pulling down a rebound, and he’s a versatile defender who can protect the rim and defend the pick-and-roll. He finished with 12 points for a balanced Van Meter team in their win over Creston.
2022 SG Bo Huston Bo Huston 5'10" | SG Dallas Center-Grimes | 2022 State IA (Dallas Center-Grimes)
With Mustangs star guard Cole Glasgow Cole Glasgow 6'2" | SG Dallas Center- Grimes | 2022 State IA up in Minneapolis at the MBCA Showcase, Huston had a chance to shine, and he delivered. A knockdown lefty shooter who thrived last year getting open looks while playing alongside Glasgow and Luke Rankin Luke Rankin 5'10" | PG Dallas Center-Grimes | 2021 State IA (he shot 52.2% from 3), he showed his all-around scoring ability in the Mustangs win over Harlan. He didn’t have his best shooting game, but found other ways to make an impact. I’d imagine that he and Glasgow will both play with the ball in their hands more this year, and he showed that he’s a quality ball-handler and decision maker as well.
