Here are the 16U standouts from the weekend:
Trevor Bell, 6’5″, 2023, Grassroots: Wellington Blue, High School: Wellington
Bell showed his skillset was top of the line all weekend at the US Amateur State Championships. The Wellington native is a long and agile forward with a great ability to put the ball in the basket. He looked poised as a forward threat who was able to operate around the low post with ease. Thanks to his length and athleticism, Bell is a dunk threat as well and even more of a menace on the defensive end. His game is smooth and he has a skillset that is sophisticated enough that it could fit probably any system. He’s versatile and can shoot the ball from outside the paint as well, although his work inside the paint is where he gets his money. Bell had an impressive 12 points and several blocks in the first game of the series and will be a big part of Wellington’s future.
Jeffrey Simpson, 6′, 2023, Grassroots: SWFL Elite, High School: Golden Gate
Simpson was one of my favorite players I scouted all weekend. The guard was THE man for the SWFL Elite as they battled against the Wellington Blue. On offense, Simpson stood out for his incredible jump shooting and elite ability to get downhill. But while his 24 point outbreak may be what catches your attention in the scorebook, Simpson’s best attributes really stood out on the defensive end. Simpson was a steal machine who was the first one you met across half court. He generated a ton of turnovers and kept the SWFL Elite in it, even when they couldn’t buy a basket. Simpson’s hustle was unmatched all weekend, he was the first player down the floor every possession, the first player on the floor every loose ball, and the guy who made sure that scoring would never be an easy task. His mix of offensive and defensive prowess made him a huge threat all weekend and caught my eye for sure.
Brian Wright, 6’4′, 2023, Grassroots: Wellington Blue, High School: St. John Paul
Wright served as a great piece to a very well put together Wellington Blue puzzle. Wright’s ability to shoot the ball was unmatched in the 16U division. He was an under the radar shooter who poured in multiple triples in almost all of his trips out. He also was quietly bouncy, exciting the crowd with an unexpected high flying dunk in his 16 point outing against SWFL Elite. Wright had really good instincts about the game and could serve as an effective 3 and D guy for great high school team next season.
