We continue by looking at the top shooting guards and small forwards in the rankings, ranking number 15-6! Be sure to stay tuned to Prep Hoops VA for even more rankings content moving forward.
#15 Jacob Rice Jacob Rice 6'7" | SF Miller School | 2022 State VA | 6’7” | Miller School (#34 Overall)
Rice is more of a hybrid forward than a straight wing, but his ability to be a mismatch on the perimeter and guard wings is why I list him as a small forward first and foremost. He’s a versatile guy who can put it on the deck and stretch the floor out to the three-point line, he can rebound and finish at the rim and as I mentioned before he’s able to guard multiple positions.
#14 George Beal George Beal 6'4" | SF Kings Fork | 2022 State VA | 6’4” | King’s Fork (#29 Overall)
Beal is one of the most under recruited players in the state in my opinion, as the 6’4” wing does a lot to impact the game on both ends of the floor and doesn’t get enough recognition for all that he does. With the departure of Jayden Epps to Combine he’ll have more of a chance to show his ability to score and lead a team as he can attack off the bounce and create space, he plays with a great motor and is athletic in transition and he rebounds and defends as well.
#13 Cavan Reilly Cavan Reilly 6'4" | SG Bishop O'Connell | 2022 State VA | 6’4” | Bishop O’Connell (#28 Overall)
Reilly has been one of the top shooters in the DMV over the past few years, and when you watch him play in person you see that he has a lot more to him that just being a knock down shooter. He’s smart and thinks the game on both ends, he’s an underrated athlete that can play above the rim and make plays on the defensive end and he picks and chooses his times to fill it up and can takeover games with his shooting ability.
#12 Carmelo Pacheco Carmelo Pacheco 6'4" | SG Spotswood | 2022 State VA | 6’4” | Spotswood (#27 Overall)
Pacheco is one of the more underrated guys in the state and if he played in a bigger market maybe more people would know about him, but the 6’4” wing is a smooth operator that can fill it up and has great instincts on both ends. He isn’t the most athletic guy but he has good size and can really light it up from deep, he moves well off the ball to get open and has a quick release and he always seems to be in the right place at the right time.
#11 James Patterson James Patterson 6'5" | SG Carmel School | 2022 State VA | 6’5” | Carmel School (#26 Overall)
Patterson is one of the better long term prospects on this list, as he’s improved quite a bit over the past few years and he has great physical and athletic tools. He’s big and strong and plays with a good motor on both ends, he can isolate defenders and score in a number of ways and he brings it on the glass and thrives in transition.
#10 Anthony Davis Anthony Davis 6'5" | SF Miller School | 2022 State VA | 6’5” | Miller School (#25 Overall)
The Winchester native is back in VA after spending a few years in Florida at Bishop McLoughlin, and he already made a big impact with Miller School at the VA Live Shootout last weekend. The 6’5” wing is big and strong and an elite level athlete that can play above the rim, he can guard multiple positions and he’s more skilled of a shooter and ball handler than he’s given credit for.
#9 Davin Cosby Jr Davin Cosby Jr 6'5" | CG Word of God | 2023 #111 Nation NC . | 6’4” | John Marshall (#22 Overall)
Cosby blew up last weekend at DC Live, picking up offers from Radford, George Washington, Robert Morris and Howard while picking up interest from schools of all levels. At 6’4” Cosby is an elite shooter who can come off of pin downs and plays ran for him to make shots on the move, he’s extremely confident in his ability to make shots from deep and he has more to his game as he’s an athletic finisher and can put it on the deck and get to spots to make shots as well.
#8 Christian May Christian May 6'6" | SF Bishop O'Connell | 2022 State VA | 6’5” | Bishop O’Connell (#15 Overall)
May has had a good spring picking up offers from UMBC and George Washington, and he’s likely going to pick up more as the 6’5” wing is the perfect glue guy at the next level. He’s a good athlete who can play above the rim and guard the other team’s best player, he can catch and shoot from deep and make shots in the midrange and he’s an excellent rebounder at his position as well.
#7 Jaden Daughtry Jaden Daughtry 6'6" | SF Benedictine College Prep | 2022 VA | 6’5” | LC Bird (#10 Overall)
Daughtry was one of the most productive players in the VHSL last season en route to winning Class 5 Region B Player of the Year, and he’s continued that strong play this spring as well. He’s a high motor, downhill wing with a strong upper body that allows him to play through contact, he rebounds well and he brings good energy to his team with his above the rim play and intensity on the court.
#6 Justyn Fernandez | 6’5” | VES (#9 Overall)
Fernandez has blown up this spring with DC Premier picking up offers from George Mason, George Washington, Virginia Tech, VCU and more, and it’s easy to see why as he’s an uber athletic and talented guard with good size. He can play on and off the basketball and can stick it from deep when he’s left open, he’s a high flying above the rim player when he gets downhill and he can play on the ball to create shots in isolation situations too.
