Over 150 schools attended the event, providing me with an opportunity to see both new and old faces play alongside their high school teammates in a tournament atmosphere.
However, many Texas schools were not present at the event. Prospects whose teams were not in attendance were given the chance to play in the TABC Individual Showcase on Saturday. Here are some top-performers from that portion of the event:
Allen Singleton | 2022 | 6’0’’ Point Guard | Clear Springs HS – Singleton was great about getting to his spots, capitalizing from mid-range of the bounce on several occasions. He also looked good as a playmaker, operating comfortably in pick-and-roll scenarios. His ability to stop and start on a dime was noteworthy as well, exhibiting a suddenness to his quickness when handling the basketball.
Rocco Paul Rocco Paul 6'4" | SG Frisco | 2022 State TX | 2022 | 6’4’’ Shooting Guard | Frisco HS – Paul’s consistency as a jump-shooter really caught my eye. He knocked down threes from a variety of spots as well as some off-balanced mid-range jumpers. The Frisco two-guard was so good at getting his shots off in rhythm no matter the circumstance. His ability to score within the flow of the game was outstanding. He also made some good plays on defense, jumping passing lanes and displaying active hands at that end of the floor.
Garrett Rodgers | 2022 | 6’6’’ Power Forward | Decatur HS – Rodgers was certainly one of the craftier bigs who competed in the individual showcase. The Decatur forward was brilliant when it came to utilizing ball fakes in the post to free himself up for uncontested looks. His collection of up-and-under moves were very effective. Additionally, Rodgers was solid on the defensive glass.
Zach Gomez-Villanueva | 2022 | 5’8’’ Point Guard | New Braunfels HS – Gomez-Villanueva was one of the more productive guys I saw on Saturday. The 2022 floor general was reliable when shooting from behind the three-point line, accurate when playmaking for others, and a slippery ball handler who comfortably navigated the floor. His vision and decision making were fantastic as well. He may be undersized, but his skill is more than enough to overcome that.
Brayden Young | 2024 | 6’8’’ Power Forward/Center | Cypress Ridge HS – Young is much more mobile than he first appears. He rolls hard after setting screens and even went coast-to-coast after a steal on one occasion, finishing with a beautiful reverse layup. The Cypress Ridge big man possesses a long and wiry frame and is athletic enough to elevate and throw it down with power. Beyond that, Young was great on the defensive boards. He is still raw, but his upside is tremendous.
TJ Newton | 2022 | 6’3’’ Combo Guard | Burkburnett HS – Newton’s smooth style of play made him super fun to watch play. He made a variety of shots, highlighted by an absolutely gorgeous turnaround shot from the mid-range area, using his defender’s momentum against him to get off a clean look. The Burkburnett guard was responsible for some crafty layups in transition too. He is poised for a huge senior season and needs to be on your radar if he is not already.
Quentin Beverly | 2022 | 6’1’’ Combo Guard | Cypress Park HS – Beverly displayed a quick first step when turning on the jets to attack the basket both in half court sets and in transition. He was able to blow by defenders with regularity on Saturday. The Cypress Park guard had numerous nifty finishes at the rim, showing off his excellent body control in the process. He was constantly in attack mode on offense and that resulted in a lot of buckets.
