This tournament hosted the best talent I have seen in Hoover to this date, and it produced both high-level talent and high-level competition. Teams felt each other out on day one, and on day 2 the cream really rose to the top. Below are the players that made their marks during pool play on Saturday (day 2) as teams geared up for the championship rounds on Sunday.
Anthony “Pig” Johnson 6’2/165, PG Team TTG c/o 2022
If I had to choose only one word to describe, Pig’s performance on day 2, that word is “special”. As his team engaged in two extremely tough games, he played with the joy of a kid opening its favorite gift on Christmas. He got to the basket at will and wowed the crowd with gravity-defying dunks, an amazing handle on the ball, and a three-point jumper wetter than a duck’s back. This kid did whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted, and played great defense in the process blocking shots and altering many others. Being able to watch a player like Pig up close and personal, makes this job worth it.
Ryan Mobley Jr. 6’1/180, SG Columbus Wolves c/o 2023
One of the biggest assets a player can have is knowing how to play within their skill set. As opposing defenses gave Ryan space to shoot the three, he didn’t take the bait…it’s not his game. He did, however, put tremendous pressure on defenses by taking the ball to the hoop and finishing with great strength, touch, and body control. He also flashed an elite mid-range jumper that kept opposing teams on their heels as they picked their poison. I didn’t see Ryan shoot one three-ball, but he was the game’s leading scorer (both teams) in every game I saw. This kid can flat out ball, and he made it clear Saturday that he would not allow defenses to dictate how he plays, and in the process, he was consistently dominant.
Keontae Funderburg 6’1/175, SG ABC Basketball c/o 2021
Keontae was a walking bucket the entire day. Everything this kid did on the offensive end simply worked. He was the clear leader of his team and made his mark with timely scoring, hustle plays, and great defense. He scored in bunches at all three levels with great efficiency and flashed a basketball I.Q. and savvy only found in your most seasoned ballplayers. This kid will make a huge mark at whatever college he chooses this fall.
DeCameron Porter 6’7/180, SF Georgia Ballers c/o 2021
DeCameron first caught my attention when I looked across the Finley Center and saw him block back-to-back shots at the basket. From that point forward, I noticed this kid brings maximum effort every second of every game. He was completely exhausted after both games, and it was not a case of him being out of shape…he gave everything he had. He also flirted with a triple-double in both games racking up points, steals, assists, blocks, and rebounds at an impressive rate. He led his team in every major statistical category and showed a sweet handle, nice shot, great defense, and hustle that every college coach in America is looking for.
Shah Hall 6’8/190, SF Tuscaloosa Kings c/o 2023
The potential on this kid is limitless. His team needed him to play the center position and he did that well. I believe with his height, length, and jumping ability, he has the potential to be an elite wing someday. He didn’t complain about his role and consistently performed well by blocking shots, battling for rebounds, and making hustle plays all over the floor. His touch around the basket and jumper was also impressive. The scary part about this kid is he hasn’t even scratched the surface of what he can and will be with hard work and dedication to his craft. He has a bright future ahead of him and with the continued improvement I expect him to get a lot of attention from colleges all over America.
DeSean Sellers 6’5/170, SG Hawks Elite c/o 2023
When you look at DeSean compete, you can tell he just loves to play basketball. He is the definition of the “Ball is Life” moniker that is so popular these days. He’s tall, athletic, and plays much stronger than his slender frame would suggest. He is not afraid to be physical and showed a good ability to finish through contact. He is a really good ball handler that led the break on several occasions and scored in bunches with a nice form jump shot.
Trae Brown 6’1/165, SG South Georgia Panthers c/o 2021
Trae is a lefty flame thrower from three and was the best shooter in the building by far on Day 2. His teammates got him involved early by setting screens to get him open, and after he saw the first couple of shots go down, it was all downhill for the opposing defenses. It felt like every shot he took was going in and as defenses adjusted, he showed a nice handle to get to the basket and finish at the rim nicely. This kid balled out, leading his squad in scoring and being the catalyst to a very good 2-1 day against 3 tough teams.
Tyler Mallory Tyler Mallory 5'11" | CG Greenville | 2023 State AL 5’7/150, PG Lov Handlez c/o 2023
Tyler was as unstoppable as any player I saw all day. This kid is lighting quick with elite handles, court vision, and shooting ability. Every time he stepped on the court, he was the smallest player, but he dominated with smarts and a skillset as elite as it gets. His teammates set hard screens for him and rolled with a purpose to the basket. His team knew if their screen got Tyler open, he was going to knock the shot down, but if they were open, he would hit them in stride for an easy basket. Tyler manipulated and flamed defenses all day and made it obvious he and his teammates were there to take home first place.
